Softball Drops Day Two at Glenville State Tournament

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Gannon battled throughout a challenging day two slate at the Glenville State Tournament but came up short in both games, falling 7–5 to D'Youville in the opener before dropping a tight 2–1 extra-inning decision to host Glenville State in the nightcap.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Gannon erased an early three-run deficit with a power surge in the third inning. Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) launched a two-run home run, followed shortly after by a solo shot from Jenna Clontz (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong), evening the score at 3–3. The Golden Knights took their first lead in the fourth when Alaina Whipkey (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) drove in Carlyn Vaupel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), but D'Youville answered with a pair of runs in the sixth and added insurance in the seventh to secure the win.

Smerick finished the opener with three hits, including a home run and two RBIs, while Clontz added two hits, a home run, and two RBIs of her own. Carlyn Vaupel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) also collected multiple hits and swiped two bases in the contest.
