LAST TIME AT REGIONALS
Gannon claimed their first ever NCWWC Regional team championship in region four. They Golden Knights had nine national qualifiers and five individual regional champions.
ERIE, Pa. – History will be made over a 48 hour tournament in West Liberty. The Golden Knights will participate in the first ever NCAA Regional tournament on Friday and Saturday, taking part in the Super Region Two tournament at West Liberty University.
Each weight bracket is expected to be ultra competitive. Gannon is one of 16 teams competing in their specific regional.
GU has recent experience and history on its side: the last time the Golden Knights were in a regional competition, they blew away the field, securing the NCWWC region four team championship and earning nine national qualifying bids. GU also had five regional champions, two of which (
Bella Phillips (Bellingham, Wash./Squalicum High School),
Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School)) will be back in action at this regional as well.
Here's a closer look at some competitors to watch as we get ready for Friday.
WRESTLERS TO WATCH - NCAA SUPER REGION TWO
#20 Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) (SR - 138 lbs) - Ujfalvi is close to making history of her own at the regional. With 98 career wins, the senior can eclipse 100 career victories over the weekend. Ujfalvi won her regional bracket last season at 138 pounds, advancing to nationals. This would be her third time on the national stage, should she advance this weekend. She comes in with a 22-10 overall record on the season and a 98-42 overall career mark.
#6 Bella Phillips (Bellingham, Wash./Squalicum High School) (SO - 180 lbs) - Like Ujfalvi, Phillips is also coming off a regional championship from a season ago. The sophomore has been dominant at 180 pounds this season, entering the tournament with a 25-6 overall record and 63-15 in her career. Ranked sixth by the Open Mat, she will be one of, if not the favorite to make it out of the bracket without a loss.
Leyna Rumpler (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) (SO - 145 lbs) - Don't sleep on Rumpler, who has quietly had a strong season for the Maroon and Gold. Just a sophomore, Rumpler has tallied a 17-8 overall record heading into competition and has recorded falls or tech falls in all but two of those wins. She won the Adrian Invite earlier this season to start a strong stretch and was eighth at the North Central Invite. A talented wrestler who can score points in a hurry, she will be one to watch for GU over the two day stretch.
FROM HEAD COACH ERIN VANDIVER
"We're excited for this historic opportunity to compete in the regional tournament. Our plan all year has been to peak in the postseason, and I think we are well on our way to having success. We need to be locked in early and ready for this meet and be on our best game from the start on day one. Our team has been doing all of the right things, taking care of their bodies, and are ready to roll on Friday. We're looking forward to a great two days!"
