Football Battles IUP to the Wire in Narrow Setback

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon football team held a seven-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but Indiana (Pa.) rallied with 10 unanswered points to escape McConnell Family Stadium with a 17-14 victory on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division action.

Wide receiver Chazz Corley (Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central) turned in a standout performance, hauling in career highs of eight receptions and 167 receiving yards, including a 50-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Ty Hurst (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) that gave the Golden Knights a 14-7 lead midway through the third quarter.

Gannon (1-8, 1-6 PSAC West) forced two first-quarter turnovers to help build an early lead. Kadeem McKnight (Hartford, Ct./Capital Prep) forced a fumble that Makei Thompson (San Diego, Calif./Mira Mesa) recovered on IUP's opening possession before Aydin Edison (Dickinson, Texas/Dickinson) intercepted Mason Maggs and returned the ball 29 yards to the IUP 18-yard line. On the very next play, Andrew Kuban (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth) broke free for an 18-yard touchdown run to put the Golden Knights ahead 7-0 with 5:21 remaining in the opening quarter.

IUP (6-3, 3-3 PSAC West) answered with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Maggs to Jeremiah Coleman to tie the game at 7-7 late in the first quarter. The teams remained tied at halftime before Gannon regained the lead on Corley's 50-yard touchdown reception with 8:11 remaining in the third quarter. However, the Crimson Hawks scored 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to take a 17-14 lead. Gannon threatened to regain the advantage late, driving to the IUP 8-yard line before a fumble ended the possession.
