Golden Knights Drop Doubleheader to Hot Ashland Team

ASHLAND, Ohio – Gannon saw its two-game winning streak come to an end as Ashland (25-8) extended its winning streak to eight games in a row with 7-3, 4-0 wins over the Golden Knights.

Now 12-18 overall, Gannon returns to PSAC West action on Friday with back-to-back doubleheaders against Pitt-Johnstown. The first is set for Friday, April 11 at 1:00 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium before the two play again twice on Saturday in Johnstown.

The non-conference doubleheader gave head coach DJ Cannon an opportunity to give a few different players some action, including a number of pitchers.

Game 1 – Ashland 7, Gannon 3
Ashland used a four-run fourth inning to grab the lead and scored a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second inning against starter Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington).

Gannon scored all three of its runs in the third inning. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) doubled and eventually scored on an error. Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) plated the second run with a ground out and Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) singled to left to drive in the third.

Gannon had just three more runners reach the rest of the game. Smith had an infield single in the fifth inning and Stangelo walked and Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) had a bunt single to start the sixth. A double play and strikeout ended the sixth.

Ashland finished with nine hits and Gannon seven. Koroly was the lone Golden Knight with a pair of hits, going 2-for-3.

Five relievers hurled the game for Gannon, with Cam Ward (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), the second pitcher to enter, picking up the loss. Boyer threw the opening 2.1 innings and allowed on run with a pair of strikeouts. Dylan Crowley (Eden, N.Y./Hamburg) and Ashton Wheelock (Ashtabula, Ohio/Lakeside) each threw a scoreless inning.

Game 2 -- Ashland 4, Gannon 0
Gannon was held to just three hits in the nightcap as Ashland scored single runs in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) picked up Gannon's first hit with a single in the first inning but the next eight Golden Knights were retired before Parker came to the plate again in the fourth and poked a double to center. Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) accounted for Gannon's third hit with two outs in the seventh with an infield single.

Gannon used five different pitchers in game two. Nick Harhai (West Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) was the most effective, scattering three hits and a walk in two shutout innings with one strikeout.
