Boynar Pitches Golden Knights to Split with Mountain Cats

Smith hits three-run homer in nightcap

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team earned a split with visiting Pitt-Johnstown in the first of back-to-back doubleheaders against the Mountain Cats on Friday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium. UPJ captured the first game by a 6-1 score before the Golden Knights came back for a 4-3 win in the nightcap behind a strong performance by Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville).

The Golden Knights and Pitt-Johnstown now head down to Johnstown for Saturday's doubleheader with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. Gannon is 13-19 and 6-8 in the PSAC West after the split while UPJ is 10-22 and 2-12, respectively.

Game 1 – Pitt-Johnstown 6, Gannon 1
The Golden Knights were limited to just three hits and was able to score three times in the fourth and three more times in the sixth. Gannon took a 1-0 lead in the second thanks to two hit batters and a walk. Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) reached on a single, the first of his two base hits, and scored when Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) walked with the bases loaded.

UPJ took advantage of Ryan Hood's (Latrobe, Pa./Derry Area) wildness to score three runs in the fourth. The righthander walked two batters and Zac Legars hit a two-run homer as UPJ took a 3-1 lead. The lead grew to 6-1 with three more runs in the sixth, aided by two more walks.

Three Gannon pitchers walked seven batters and UPJ finished with eight hits. Hood had the one bad inning while going five innings, allowing four hits and four walks with five strikeouts. Costello was 2-for-3 at the plate while Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) had the other hit, a first inning triple.

Game 2 – Gannon 4, Pitt-Johnstown 3
After struggling at the plate in game one the Golden Knights opened game two with a four-run first inning on four hits. They would not score again the rest of the way but Boynar held the Mountain Cats at bay until the final inning.

Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) opened the game with a single and moved up on a wild pitch. Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) singled to right field and stole second, with Kula scoring when the throw sailed into center field. Wes Park singled to center and after an out Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) blasted a three-run homer to left field for his fourth home run of the season.

Boynar, the big sophomore righthander, took over from there. He allowed just one runner to reach second base and entered the seventh inning with a four-hit shutout, retiring eight batters in a row entering the final frame.

Things got interesting from there, as he hit the first batter and with one out allowed a single to put runners on first and second. An error plated UPJ's first run and chased Boynar from the game. Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) came in and recorded his third save of the season, striking out the final batter with runners on first and second after UPJ closed the gap to 4-3.

Both teams finished with six hits with Kula the lone Golden Knight with multiple hits, going 2-for-3. Bemis had a pair of stolen bases.

Boynar improved to 3-2 while going 6.1 innings and allowing three unearned runs. He gave up five hits and walked two with seven strikeouts. It was the longest start of his career as he fell two outs shy of his first career complete game. It also would have been Gannon's first complete game of the season.
