Golden Knights Celebrate Senior Day with Pair of Wins to Wrap Up Four-Game Sweep of Lock Haven

Mullins hits home runs in each game on 21st birthday

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon celebrated Senior Day with 35 runs and 31 hits as the Golden Knights completed a four-game sweep over Lock Haven on Saturday. The Golden Knights won the first game by a 14-8 score and took the second contest 21-1.

Both games featured big innings for the Golden Knights. Gannon broke game one open with a seven-run second inning and scored 11 runs in the fourth inning and eight in the third of the nightcap.

Coupled with a pair of wins on Friday at Lock Haven the Golden Knights posted a four-game PSAC sweep for the first time since winning all four games against Indiana (Pa.) in 2022.

In between games Gannon honored five seniors on Senior Day. They included Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington), Dylan Crowley (Eden, N.Y./Hamburg), Gabriel Morales (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/American School), Matt Graeber (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Carson Whiteman (Kane, Pa./Kane Area). The seniors all played a part in the two wins, but maybe none more than Gabriel Morales (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/American School). The native of Puerto Rico made just his second plate appearance of the season in the fifth inning of game two. He hit his first career home run.

Chris Mullins (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell), meanwhile, caught both games and celebrated his birthday in style with home runs in both games. He drove in eight runs in the doubleheader.

Most importantly, the two wins keep the Golden Knights alive in the PSAC West playoff race. They are trying to chase down IUP for the final spot in the division. Gannon is now 20-23 overall and 12-12 in the PSAC West. Lock Haven dropped to 15-29 and 5-18, respectively.

Gannon wraps up the regular season this coming week with a four-game set vs. IUP. The Crimson Hawks visit McConnell Family Stadium for two games on Thursday, May 1. The next day the two teams will play two more games at IUP.

Game 1 – Gannon 14, Lock Haven 6
Gannon sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to pull away in the first game of the doubleheader. The Golden Knights pounded out 15 hits with six extra base hits. Among those extra base hits was the first career home run for Chris Mullins (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell), on his birthday no less.

The game was tied at 1-1 when Gannon came to the plate in the second inning. Mullins then celebrated his birthday with his first career home run, a three-run shot to left field. Four batters later Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) followed with his second RBI single of the game to make it 5-1. The lead grew to 8-1 thanks to Hunter Troiano's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) bases-loaded triple.

Lock Haven closed the gap to 8-4 in the fourth inning but Gannon answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Three walks loaded the bases and with two outs Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) singled to center to drive in two runs.

Back came the Bald Eagles with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to chase starter Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) and close the gap to 10-6. Down a starter due to injury Gannon's top reliever was able to give the Golden Knights four innings while improving to 1-2.

The Golden Knights weren't done scoring, however. They scored four times on five hits in the bottom of the fifth. Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) drove in the first two runs with a laser to left field that hit the base of the fence for a double. Smith added his third hit of the day, an RBI double to right field, and Troiano closed the scoring with an RBI single.

Six Golden Knights had multiple hits with Smith and Bemis with three hits apiece. Smith drove in three runs, while Troiano led Gannon with four RBIs on two hits. Mullins added three RBIs. Parker and Kula had two hits and two RBIs.

Nick Robertson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and seniors Matt Graeber (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) and Carson Whiteman (Kane, Pa./Kane Area) each threw a shutout inning to complete the win.

Game 2 -- Gannon  21, Lock Haven 1
After scoring 22 runs in a non-conference game on Tuesday against D'Youville the Golden Knights exploded for 21 runs, with eight runs coming in the third inning and 11 more in the fourth. Gannon had 16 hits and also took advantage of 11 walks.

Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) gave Gannon a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the first. The Golden Knights then 13 batters to the plate in the third and scored eight times thanks to six hits, three walks and a hit by pitch. Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley), Chris Mullins (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) and Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) all had two-run doubles in the inning.

That was just a precursor of things to come. Fifteen batters stepped to the plate in the fourth. Gannon only had five hits but took advantage of six walks. Parker had a two-run single, Smith added a two-run double, and Mullins hit a home run for the second straight game to cap the huge inning, this one a two-run shot.

Gabriel Morales (Bayamon, Puerto Rico/American School) accounted for Gannon's final run with his first career home run and second career hit in the sixth inning.
Freshman Zach Tkatch (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) threw the first four innings to improve to 2-1. He allowed two hits and three walks with a season-high six strikeouts. Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington), Nick Harhai (West Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) and Dylan Crowley (Eden, N.Y./Hamburg) all threw an inning to close out the win.

Mullins drove in five runs with 3-for-4 effort a the plate, falling a triple shy of the cycle. Parker was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with 4 RBIs. Troiano also drove in four runs with a pair of hits while scoring three times. Smith added three hits and two
RBIs.
