Golden Knights Earn Split with IUP Before Rains Come

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon saw its PSAC playoff hopes come to an end on Thursday afternoon with an 11-5 loss to Indiana (Pa.) in the first game of a PSAC West doubleheader. The loss, coupled with Slippery Rock's 3-0 win over Seton Hill, eliminated the Golden Knights from playoff contention.

The Golden Knights came back to win game two by a 7-4 score in a game stopped after five innings due to lightning. Head coach DJ Cannon's team improved to 21-24 overall and 13-13 in PSAC West action despite losing first baseman Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and shortstop Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) to injuries in the first game. IUP is now 23-24 and 16-10, respectively.

Gannon and IUP will meet for one final doubleheader to conclude the regular season on Friday at IUP. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.

RECORDS WATCH
Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) continues to climb in several statistical categories. Most noteworthy, he has now scored 42 runs, climbing into a tie for seventh in the season records. In addition, he hit a double each game to give him 17 for the season. That is good for a tie for fifth. Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) now has 10 home runs and 41 RBIs. He is tied for fourth in season home runs and is now tied seventh in season RBIs. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) now has 28 walks which is tied for ninth in a season.

Game 1 – Indiana (Pa.) 11, Gannon 5
Gannon was never able to come back after IUP scored four runs in the top of the first inning. The Golden Knights answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning after Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) led off with a walk and Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) followed with a two-run homer. It was the junior's tenth of the season and was hit into a strong wind.

The Crimson Hawks followed with two more runs in the second as starting pitcher Ryan Hood (Latrobe, Pa./Derry Area) was unable to find his rhythm. Their lead grew to 9-2 with three runs off reliever Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington). Boyer would allow two more runs in the seventh inning but the senior saved the bullpen with three games remaining, throwing the final four innings. He struck out five batters.

Gannon added a run in the fourth inning on Brendan Koroly's (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) single, driving in Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands). Kula reached on a double. The Golden Knights completed the scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh. The first scored on Parker's ground ball to short. He would reach on a throwing error with Koroly scoring. Bemis scored the second run on Ian Soto's (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) sacrifice fly. The sophomore had reached on his second double of the game.

Game 2 – Gannon 7, Indiana (Pa.) 4 (5 innings)
Gannon took a 1-0 lead on back-to-back doubles by Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) and Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) with two outs in the first. IUP responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second before the Golden Knights tied the game at 2-2, again with a run with two outs. Alex Bemis' (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) RBI single accounted for the run, driving in Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) who walked and stole second and third.

IUP regained the lead with a pair of runs in the third but Gannon scored the next five runs, four in the bottom of the third and another in the fourth. The Golden Knights sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the third and scored four runs to take a 6-4 lead as five of the first six batters reached base.

Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) made it 4-3 with an RBI single and Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) knotted the score at 4-4 with another RBI single. Freshman Cainen Atherton (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union Area) followed with a run-scoring double to left center to give Gannon the lead. Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) capped the four-run rally with a bases loaded walk.

Gannon added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a Kula two-out run-scoring double
Reliever Nick Robertson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), who entered in the fourth inning and pitched out of a jam, threw the final two innings, including a one-two-three fifth. Lightning was detected before Gannon came to bat in the fifth. Following an 18-minute delay the umpires called the game. A redshirt freshman, Robertson picked up his first career win.

Kula was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of RBIs. Soto and Costello were 2-for-3 with both of Soto's hits doubles.
