Golden Knights Sweep Lock Haven Behind Strong Pitching Efforts from Hood, Boynar

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Gannon received a pair of strong pitching efforts from big righthanders Ryan Hood (Latrobe, Pa./Derry Area) and Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) to sweep a doubleheader at Lock Haven on Friday. The Golden Knights beat the Bald Eagles by identical scores of 5-3 to remain in the hunt for a PSAC playoff berth.

Gannon improved to 18-23 overall and 10-12 in the PSAC West and has now won three straight games. The Bald Eagles dropped to 15-27 and 5-16, respectively. The two teams will play a second doubleheader at McConnell Family Stadium on Saturday.

The Western Division sweep was just the second for the Golden Knights this year but came at a perfect time as they try to claim the last berth in the PSAC West playoff field.

Game 1 – Gannon 5, Lock Haven 3
The Golden Knights rode a strong pitching effort by Ryan Hood (Latrobe, Pa./Derry Area) to an opening-game win. The righthander threw the first six inning limiting the Bald Eagles to just one unearned run and six hits. He walked one and struck out six while improving to 3-4.

Gannon opened the scoring in the second inning on a fielders choice by Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic), scoring Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley). The freshman shortstop had reached on a bunt single earlier in the inning.

The lead grew to 3-0 in the fourth with Troiano scoring one of the two runs. He reached on an infield single with one out, moved up on Frank Kula's (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) single, and both scored when Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) grounded a two-run single through the left side.

Lock Haven scored an unearned run with two outs in the fifth, but Gannon scored twice in the top of the sixth, both with two outs. Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) and Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) had RBI singles to give Gannon a 5-1 lead.

As it turned out those two runs were needed as Lock Haven scored twice against reliever Brady Berdine (Warren, Pa./Warren Area). The freshman induced a groundout to second for the final out.

Troiano finished 2-for-3 with two runs while Parker had a pair of hits and drove in a run. Stangelo had 2 RBIs.

Game 2 – Gannon 5, Lock Haven 3
Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) continued his solid mound work while improving to 5-2 on the season. After falling an out short of a no-hitter in his last start the sophomore allowed six hits to the Bald Eagles, but came up big when it was needed the most.

Like the first game Gannon jumped out to a 5-1 lead after scoring two runs in the third and three in the fourth. Lock Haven came back to score twice in the bottom of the fourth but Boynar ended the threat with a pair of strikeouts.

He proceeded to retire ten batters in a row before a double with two outs in the seventh. Boynar finished with his second straight complete game with a lineout to first base. Boynar struck out nine while allowing just two walks.

Gannon finished the game with nine hits. Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) provided the first two runs with a two-run homer to right, his seventh of the season, in the third inning after Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) opened the inning with a double. That gave Gannon a 2-1 lead.

The Golden Knights scored three more times in the fourth while bunching together five hits. Koroly singled in two runs and Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) added an RBI single with two outs.

Koroly ended the game at 2-for-3 with 2
RBIs, and Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) was also 2-for-3.
