Golden Knights Pound Out 21 Hits in 22-11 Win over D'Youville

Smith has five hits and four RBIs, Parker drives in five

ERIE, Pa. – It was almost a year ago on April 30 that the Gannon baseball team won 22-10 at Walsh. On Tuesday the Golden Knights again scored 22 runs while defeating D'Youville 22-11 at McConnell Family Stadium. The victory boosted Gannon to 16-23.

The slugfest saw the two teams combine for 33 hits, 21 by Gannon, with the Golden Knights batting around three times. Head coach DJ Cannon employed a bullpen game with nine pitchers throwing an inning a piece. Freshman Hayden Jenkins (Carrollton, Ohio/Carrollton), the second of the nine hurlers, picked up his first career win with a perfect second inning, striking out two.

But the day belonged to the hitters. Gannon scored at least two runs in every inning but the first and third. D'Youville opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning but Gannon answered with five runs in the second and never trailed again.

The Golden Knights scored four runs in the fourth and fifth innings, five in the sixth, and then closed out the game with two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.

Five batters had at least three hits, led by Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) who went 5-for-7 with 5 runs and 4 RBIs. That included a two-run homer in the seventh inning, his fifth of the season. For good measure he then closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning on the mound, striking out one.

Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) drove in five runs and scored four times while going 3-for-4 with a walk. The big first baseman hit his ninth home run of the season in the fifth and cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the second.

Freshman shortstop Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) was 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs, while Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) scored four times while going 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs. He had a pair of doubles and also walked twice. Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) went 3-for-5 at the plate with 2 RBIs. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) drove in three runs.

Cannon now hopes the Golden Knights saved some runs for this weekend when they play a four-game series against Lock Haven. The series gets underway with two games at Lock Haven on Friday, April 25.
