Bemis, Soto Hit Home Runs but Golden Knights Fall Twice to Seton Hill

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon dropped a pair of games to Seton Hill in a soggy doubleheader at McConnell Family Stadium on Saturday. The Griffins ended up winning three of the four games in the four-game series as Gannon fell to 15-23 overall and 8-12 in the PSAC West. Seton Hill is 28-10 and 14-6 after winning game one 16-6 and game two 4-1.

Seton Hill ended the day with five home runs while Gannon hit a pair. Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) hit his sixth homer in the first game and Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) his fifth in game number two. Bemis has now hit a home run in three of the last five games.

Game 1 – Seton Hill 16, Gannon 6
The Griffins jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the second inning and Gannon was forced to play catch up the rest of the game. Seton Hill scored four runs in the first and three more in the second as leadoff hitter Jack Whalen hit home runs in each of his first two at bats.

Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) relieved starter Zach Tkatch (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) in the second inning and was able to slow the Griffins down. The Golden Knights, meanwhile, scored three times in the second and added a run in the fourth to close to 7-4. Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) continued his hot streak with a double to drive in Gannon's first run and Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) drew a bases loaded walk for the second. Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) followed with an RBI single but the inning could have been much bigger if not for a double play to end the game.

Bemis doubled with one out in the fourth and scored on Wes Parker's (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) RBI single but the inning ended with runners on first and third.
Unfortunately after throwing two scoreless innings Boyer tired in the fifth. The Griffins responded with eight runs on seven hits against three Gannon relievers to put the game away.

Gannon scored twice in the sixth inning on Bemis' third hit of the day, a two-run homer. It was the sophomore's sixth of the season and second in the last two games. Bemis ended the day 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Smith 2-for-4 with a run batted in.

Game 2 – Seton Hill 4, Gannon 1
The Golden Knights outhit Seton Hill 9-8 but they were unable to get on the board until there were two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) hit a home run to left center to avert the shutout. It was his fifth of the season.

Seton Hill scored a run in the first then took a 3-0 lead on a two-run homer by Mark Black, the Griffins fifth home run of the day. They added a two-out run in the third inning to move ahead 4-0, and in the process drove starter Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) from the game.

Lefthanded reliever Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) came in and was brilliant in relief but the Golden Knights were unable to score off three Seton Hill pitchers. They had plenty of opportunities with at least one base runner in every inning, leaving the bases loaded in the first, runners on second and third in the second, and a runner on third in the fourth. Larry Slater hit a double in the sixth but was thrown out at third trying to stretch it into a triple to end the inning.

Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted), Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) and Slater finished with two hits apiece. Ayres threw the final 4.1 innings, allowing four hits while walking two and striking out three.

NEXT FOR THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS
Gannon hosts D'Youville in a nine-inning non-conference game on Tuesday, April 22 before returning to PSAC West action with four games against Lock Haven next weekend.
