Boynar Falls One Out Short of No-Hitter but Wins 5-0 over Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa.Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) came within an out of a no-hitter in game number two to lead Gannon to a split at Seton Hill on Friday afternoon. The Golden Knights were held to two hits in a 7-0 opening-game loss but came back with a spectacular pitching performance by Boynar to win 5-0.

The Golden Knights are now 15-21 overall and 8-10 in the PSAC West while Seton Hill is 26-10 and 12-6 respectively.  The two teams return to Erie on Saturday to play two more games at McConnell Family Stadium. The doubleheader gets underway at 1:00 p.m.

For the second time this season Boynar flirted with a no-hitter. On Feb. 28 the big righthander went 5.1 no-hit innings against Lake Erie before allowing a double. The Storm would end up scoring two runs to hand him the loss in a 5-1 nine-inning game.

On Friday he retired the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch hitter H Boebel hit a slow roller down the third base line on a 1-2 count. Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) charged in and fielded  the ball but his throw was off the mark on a bang-bang play and it was ruled a base hit, breaking up the no-hitter.

The last no-hitter by a Golden Knight occurred in 2015 with Aaron Cox no-hitting Limestone (S.C.).

Game 1 – Seton Hill 7, Gannon 0
Ryan Hood (Latrobe, Pa./Derry Area) (2-4) battled for five innings but the Griffins finally knocked the redshirt sophomore out of the game in the sixth inning. Seton Hill scored single runs in the first, second and fifth innings before scoring four times in the sixth. The Golden Knights, meanwhile, were never able to get anything going at the plate against Jon McCullough. The righthander threw a two-hitter to improve to 7-2. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) and Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) had singles for the Golden Knights.

Game 2 – Gannon 5, Seton Hill 0
After going nine innings without a run the Golden Knights struck for three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) opened the inning with an infield single and proceeded to score when Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) followed with a double to right center. Following a sacrifice Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) hit his fifth home run of the season over the left field fence for a 3-0 advantage. Gannon added two runs in the fifth with Stangelo again involved in the scoring. The sophomore catcher singled to start the inning. He moved to third on a Seton Hill error and scored on a wild pitch. With two outs Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) drove in Lance Slater (Renfrew, Pa./Butler), who reached on the error, to make it 5-0. Boynar, meanwhile, was mowing down a strong Griffins' lineup. He opened the seventh with a line out to right, followed by a fly ball to center before the infield single ruined his attempt at a no-hitter. He improved to 4-2 on the season while allowing three walks and striking out five. He not only recorded his first career shutout but it was his first career complete game. He allowed just one runner to reach second base, that coming in the first inning. Stangelo finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and scored a pair of runs while Bemis drove in two runs with his homer.
