Gannon Posts 8-3 Win in Game Two to Earn Split with IUP

Armstrong strikes out 11, Golden Knights pound out 13 hits

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon softball team rallied for a doubleheader split with Indiana (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Knights remained right on IUP's heels for second place in the PSAC West. The Crimson Hawks coasted to a 12-3 win in five innings in the opening game, pounding out 14 hits. Gannon came back behind another strong pitching performance from Katie Armstrong (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) and 13 hits to win 8-2 in the nightcap.

The loss in the opening game snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Golden Knights as they are now 21-13 overall and 12-6 in the PSAC West. IUP is 22-10 and 13-5, respectively.

The Golden Knights will play their third doubleheader in four days on Tuesday, April 15 with two games at Slippery Rock.

Game 1 – Indiana (Pa.) 12, Gannon 3
A disastrous first inning left the Golden Knights trailing 6-0 and IUP's lead grew to 10-0 after two innings. The Crimson Hawks chased starter Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) from the game in the first inning helped by three Gannon errors.

Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) provided the highlight for the Golden Knights with a three-run homer in the second inning. It was the senior's third of the season. Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) led off the inning with a walk and Destiny Garcia (Stockton, Cal./Bear Creek) followed with a single. After an out Girman's high fly to center cleared the fence.

The Golden Knights would threaten just once more, leaving runners on first and third in the fourth inning while IUP scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the final score.

In addition to a base hit Garcia debuted in the circle and pitched the final four innings.

Game 2 – Gannon 8, Indiana (Pa.) 3
Gannon turned the tables on IUP in the second game with a big first inning of its own. The Golden Knights scored three runs thanks to four hits in the opening frame. Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) led off with a single and scored on Sadie Carroll's (North Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) double to right center. With two outs Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) drove in Carroll with a double and the first baseman scored on Abbey Girman's (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) double, Gannon's third two-bagger of the inning.

After breezing through the first three innings with seven strikeouts Katie Armstrong (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) ran into trouble in the fourth. IUP bunched three hits and an error together to score twice and cut the lead to 3-2. The sophomore retired the final two batters with runners on second and third to maintain the lead. She allowed just one more run, that a solo homer with two outs in the seventh.

Gannon answered with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to boost its lead to 6-2. Girman opened with her second double, was sacrificed to third and scored on Bella Atherton's (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) sacrifice fly with the ball being dropped to give the Golden Knights a baserunner.  Smerick followed with a base hit and Smerick and pinch runner Kaleigh Ciesielski (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Maryvale) scored on Carroll's single through the left side to make it 6-2.

The Golden Knights put the finishing touched on the win with a pair of runs in the sixth on three hits. Smerick led off with her third hit of the game and reached second as Carroll collected her third hit. Following a sacrifice Smerick scored on Destiny Garcia's (Stockton, Cal./Bear Creek) RBI groundout. Mallozzi's triple to left center plated Carroll for the final run.

Armstrong won her fifth straight game while improving to 13-3 on the season. She recorded her sixth game of the season with 10-or-more strikeouts, fanning 11. She held an IUP team hitting almost .330 to seven hits and did not walk a batter.

Smerick and Carroll each went 3-for-4 with Carroll driving in three runs. Mallozzi added a double and a triple and two RBIs while Girman had two hits, including a double, with an RBI. Gannon ended with six extra base hits.
