Golden Knights Ride Bemis' Big Effort to 12-1 Win in Nightcap at UPJ

Sophomore third baseman drives in five runs

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – For the second day in a row the Gannon baseball team earned a split of a doubleheader against Pitt-Johnstown. Both days saw the Golden Knights drop the opener only to come back and win game two. On Saturday UP scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-4 win but the Gannon bats exploded for a 12-1 victory in the nightcap.

The Golden Knights are now 14-20 overall and 7-9 in PSAC West action while UPJ is 11-23 and 3-13, respectively.

Gannon hosts D'Youville in a non-conference nine-inning single game on Tuesday, April 15. The two teams met in March in Buffalo with Gannon prevailing 8-5.

Game 1 – Pitt-Johnstown 7, Gannon 4

The game went back-and-forth with Pitt-Johnstown scoring first in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 lead. The Golden Knights moved ahead 2-1 with a pair of runs in the third inning. Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) led off the inning with a single and moved to third on Wes Parker's (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) double. Ian Soto's (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) groundout drove in Bemis and Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) followed with another RBI groundout.

UPJ pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double and two-run single to regain the lead at 4-2. Soto knotted the score at 4-4 with a two-run homer in the top of the fifth. It was the redshirt junior's fourth of the season.

The Mountain Cats regained the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. They took advantage of two hits, three walks and a hit batter to score three times. Parker reached on an error to start the seventh but the game ended on a double play.

Gannon finished with six hits with Parker going 2-for-3. Soto drove in three runs. Three freshmen took the mound for the Golden Knights with Brady Berdine (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) picking up the loss in relief. He is now 1-1.

Game 2 – Gannon 12, Pitt-Johnstown 1
Gannon scored in just two innings but that was more than enough as the Golden Knights scored their most runs since a 19-13 loss at Grand Valley State on March 15. Gannon scored seven runs in the second, the most runs in an inning this season. They added five runs in the sixth inning.

Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) led an 11-hit attack with a 4-for-5 effort, driving in five runs. The sophomore third baseman hit a two-run double in the second inning then added a three-run homer in the sixth.

Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township), who was 2-for-4, also homered for the Golden Knights. It was his team-high eighth of the season, a two-run shot also in the second inning. Bemis now has four home runs. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.

After a scoreless first inning Gannon sent ten batters to the plate in the second inning while scoring seven runs. They actually had just four hits, but three of the four were for extra bases, and they also took advantage of three walks.

Drew Stangelo's (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) sacrifice fly plated the first run and Kula followed with a two-run single to make it 3-0. Bemis' two-run double made it 5-0 and Parker capped the big inning with a two-run blast to center.

The Golden Knights put the game away with five insurance runs in the sixth. Bemis opened the inning with a three-run homer following a pair of walks. Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) added a sacrifice fly and Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) singled up the middle to account for the final run.

While Gannon was exploding for 12 runs three pitchers limited the Mountain Cats to just a run on five hits. Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) started and went the first five innings to improve to 4-1. He allowed five hits and a pair of walks while striking out three. Nick Harhai (West Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) threw a scoreless sixth inning with two walks and three strikeouts and Hayden Jenkins (Carrollton, Ohio/Carrollton) tossed a scoreless seventh.
