Gannon Dials Long Distance in 14-4 Win over Point Park

Soto, Parker, Troiano hit home runs

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Gannon baseball team sprinted out to 10-0 lead and handed Point Park a 14-4 loss on Saturday. The Golden Knights have now won four straight games in Florida to improve to 5-4 and will wrap up their five-game spring trip facing Wayne State (Neb.) on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. Point Park dropped to 7-4.

Three Golden Knights hit home runs, including a grand slam for Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati). It was his first career home run. Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) added a three-run blast and Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) a two-run homer, Parker hitting his second of the season and freshman Troiano his first career long ball.

Soto and Troiano were each 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs. Troiano added a double along with his home run. Parker went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Leadoff hitter Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) scored three times, reaching on a single and two walks. He stole a base while Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) swiped a pair of bases.

Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) tossed the first four innings allowing all four runs while striking out six to pick up the win. Logan Ayes came in and threw the final three innings for the save, permitting one hit and striking out four.

Gannon opened the scoring when Kula walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Parker in the bottom of the first. The Golden Knights pushed across five runs in the bottom of the second, four coming in Soto's grand slam to left field. Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) came across with the first run after walking and stealing second and third. The sophomore outfielder scored in a Troiano single. Kula singled and Nick Walker (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for Soto's first career homer.

A home run accounted for three of the four runs Gannon scored in the third to go ahead 10-0. Bemis tripled and scored on an error. After a Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) single, Troiano drove the ball over the center field fence for a three-run homer.

Point Park came back to score three runs in the top of the fourth but Gannon countered with two more runs thanks to Parker's second homer in Florida. He followed a Soto single with a blast to left.

The Pioneers added a run in the fifth to make it 12-4. Gannon scored in the bottom of the frame when Nick Walker (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) doubled to drive in Kula, who had walked.

Ayres retired Point Park in order in the sixth and seventh innings. Gannon reached the 10-run rule with one out in the bottom of the inning. Stangelo walked and Troiano doubled to end the game and make it four wins in a row for Gannon.
