Timely Hitting, Strong Pitching Lead Golden Knights to Win over Rockhurst

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Gannon baseball team made it two wins in a row to start its spring trip to Florida, receiving solid pitching and timely hitting for a 5-4 win over Rockhurst. The Golden Knights improved to 3-4 while Rockhurst is now 8-3.

The Golden Knights were outhit 10-4 but made the most of their four safeties, scoring once in the bottom of the first inning and then scoring four times in the fifth after the Hawks had tied the game in the top of the inning.

Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) opened the bottom of the first with a single and stole second. He scored with two outs on Wes Parker's (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) single to left.
Rockhurst tied the game in the top of the fifth at 1-1, but Gannon answered with four runs. Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) reached on an error and eventually scored on a passed ball. With two outs Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) was hit by a pitch and stole second. Ian Soto's (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) single to right plated Bemis and Parker followed with a two-run homer, his first as a Golden Knight.

The Hawks made things interesting in the eighth inning scoring three times. Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) relieved Nick Robertson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), who entered at the top of the inning, and retired the last two batters on a sacrifice fly and strikeout.

Smith, a redshirt sophomore, retired the Hawks in order in the top of the ninth for his first save of the season.

Freshman Zach Tkatch (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) picked up his first career win with an impressive seven innings. The righthander scattered seven hits while striking out four. He did not allow a walk.

Parker, a transfer from Toledo who missed the start of the season with an injury, was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

Gannon returns to action on Friday playing at Rollins. First pitch for the nine-inning game is set for 2:00 p.m.
