Golden Knights Gain Control in Third Quarter and Defeat Charleston (WV) 13-8

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team outscored host Charleston (WV) 5-1 in the third quarter, snapping a 6-6 halftime tie, and went on to post a 13-8 win. The victory boosted the Golden Knights to 3-6 while snapping a three-game losing streak. The Golden Eagles dropped to 7-4.

With the score tied at 6-6 Gannon came out of the locker room and scored the first three goals of the third quarter. Maggie McGinnis (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) gave Gannon the lead for good at 7-6 with a goal at the 10:46 mark, assisted by Ella Todd (Maple Ridge, British Columbia/Maple Ridge Secondary). Charlie Hunter (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg) scored a goal 30 seconds later and Todd made it 9-6 with a goal at 6:16. Gannon led 11-7 after three quarters.

The Golden Eagles would get no closer as Rayla Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) opened the scoring in the fourth period with a goal to make it 12-7. The two team exchanged goals later in the period, with Avrey Kirisits (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) scoring an insurance goal with 3:25 left.

The Golden Knights never trailed in the game after scoring the first three goals of the game, with Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) accounting for two of the goals. Charleston came back with three straight goals and the teams were tied on three occasions, the last the half.

Stevens had three goals and an assist while adding six draw controls. Hunter added three goals while Todd had two goals and three assists. Kirisits had a pair of goals.

Haleigh Manning (Milton, Ga./Cambridge) was brilliant in goal as the senior finished with 13 saves while allowing just eight goals. Gannon finished with a slight 30-28 advantage in shots and the shots on goal were even at 20-20.

Gannon returns to action on Wednesday, April 2 with a PSAC West match at Edinboro. The Charleston match was the final non-conference match of the season for the Golden Knights who play their final eight matches vs. PSAC West opponents.
