Golden Knights Snap Five-Game Losing Streak with 8-5 Win at D'Youville

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The Gannon baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak on Tuesday with an 8-5 win over D'Youville at Sal Maglie Field. The Golden Knights improved to 6-9 while a D'Youville squad that has faced a very difficult schedule dropped to 3-16.

The Golden Knights jumped out to an 8-3 lead thanks to a four-run third inning. Leading 8-5 after four innings in the nine-inning game, starter Dylan Crowley (Eden, N.Y./Hamburg) and three relievers held the Saints scoreless the rest of the way.

D'Youville took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the first but the Golden Knights came back with two runs in the top of the second. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) hit a one-out double and eventually scored on a passed ball. Chris Mullins (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) drove in the second run with a double.

The Saints regained the lead at 3-2 with two more unearned runs in the second inning. Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) led off the top of the third with his second home run and Brady Gavula (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) drove in two runs with a triple down the right field line. He scored on a two-out double by Mullins for a four-run inning and a 6-3 lead.

Gannon's lead grew to 8-3 in the fourth inning thanks to Alex Bemis' (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) RBI triple and an error allowing Bemis to score.

D'Youville bunched together three hits for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth but that brought the scoring to an end. The Saints were unable to get a runner beyond second the rest of the way.

Crowley made his first start of the season and went the first five innings to improve to 2-1. He allowed five runs, but just two earned, while scattering five hits. He walked a pair of batters and struck out one.

Brady Berdine (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) threw a scoreless sixth inning with two walks and a strikeout. Nick Robertson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) followed with two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk and striking out three. Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth, allowing a hit with one strikeout.

Gannon outhit D'Youville 12-8 with Bemis going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs. Mullins was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and two doubles, with Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) also going 2-for-4. Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) had two hits in five at bats.

The Golden Knights now open PSAC West action on Friday, March 21 hosting Clarion for a doubleheader. The two teams then return to Clarion the next day for another doubleheader.
