Golden Knights Hold Off Shippensburg to Pick Up First Win of Season

Freshmen Troiano, Tkatch lead the way in 5-4 win

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Gannon head coach DJ Cannon had to hold his breath for the final out but the Golden Knights produced win number one on Sunday afternoon with a 5-4 win over Shippensburg. In a three-game series that could have seen the Golden Knights win all three, a young rebuilt team heads back to Erie at 1-2. Shippensburg is now 4-3.

Thanks to two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth Gannon grabbed a 5-1 lead. The Raiders scored a run in the fifth and closed to 5-3 in the eighth with a run. Freshman Zach Tkatch (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth but then permitted a walk and a double. A run when would score when the base hit was misplayed in the outfield. With the tying run on second he induced a ground ball to short to end the game.

Tkatch entered in the sixth inning and threw the final four innings. He allowed five hits and one earned run, walking two and striking out two to pick up the save. Dylan Crowley (Eden, N.Y./Hamburg) earned the win after relieving starter Ryan Hood (Latrobe, Pa./Derry Area) in the fourth and throwing 1.1 innings.

Gannon opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Cainen Atherton (Mount Union, Pa./Mount Union Area) reached on a two-base error and scored on Hunter Troiano's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) single to right field. Shippensburg answered with a run in the bottom of the inning on a Thomas Cano-Piszel home run.

The Golden Knights took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth and extended the lead to 5-1 with two more in the fifth. Tommy Koroly (Mars, Pa./North Catholic) opened the fourth with a single and Atherton was hit by a pitch. Koroly stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) plated Atherton with a single down the right field line with two outs.

In the fifth, with one out Brady Gavula (Butler, Pa./Butler Area) reached on an error and moved up to second on Koroly's infield single. With two outs and the bases loaded Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) poked a single down the left field line for two runs.

Gannon finished with 12 hits in the game while Shippensburg had 11. The Golden Knights left 17 runners on base and Shippensburg 13.

Troiano was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Koroly, Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) and Nick Walker (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) had two hits apiece. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) had one stolen base giving him five in the three-game series.

Weather permitting, Gannon is scheduled to play Lake Erie in a four-game set next weekend. The Golden Knights will travel to Ohio for two games on Friday, February 28 and two more on Saturday, March 1.
