Gannon Drops Final Five Matches at Kutztown to Suffer First PSAC Loss

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Gannon men's wrestling team jumped out to a 19-3 lead after the first five boutson Saturday afternoon at Kutztown but the Golden Bears went on to dominate the upper weight classes. Kutztown won the final five weight classes to hand Gannon its first loss in PSAC action by a 25-19 score.

The setback leaves Gannon, ranked 14th by the NWCA and 15th in The Open Matt rankings, at 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the PSAC. Kutztown, just slightly behind the Golden Knights at 20th and 23rd, respectively, in the rankings, improved to 8-1 and 2-1 in the PSAC.

Injuries finally caught up with the Golden Knights as nationally-ranked Kenny Kiser (Meadville, Pa./Saegertown) (149 lbs.) and Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) (hwt.), both top ten wrestlers, were missing from the lineup. And head coach Tom Boyd has had to fill a gap at 184 lbs. all year after Cole Casilio (Wilcox, Pa./Johnsonburg Area) went down with a season-ending injury just prior to the season.

Gannon's Logan Sallot (Erie, PA/McDowell High School) (20-3), ranked seventh in The Open Mat poll and 14th by the NWCA, picked up a forfeit win at 125 lbs.

Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) rallied for a 7-6 decision at 133 lbs. to improve ro 18-3. Ranked ninth by the NWCA and 11th by The Open Mat, trailed 4-1 early in the third period against Javien DeLeon. A takedown midway through the period knotted the match but a DeLeon escape made it 5-4. Echevarria recorded the winning takedown in the final minute.

Brock Christian (Perry, Ohio/Perry) (11-7) boosted Gannon's lead to 13-0 with an 11-2 major decision over Joey Ortega at 141 lbs. The redshirt freshman recorded a takedown in each period.

Caleb Chaves (Odenton, Md./Arundel), filling in for fifth-ranked Kenny Kiser (Meadville, Pa./Saegertown) at 149 lbs., jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead in the first period against former teammate Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell). Ryan mounted a comeback with a takedown in the second, then took the lead with a third period takedown. He went on to defeat Chaves 9-6.

Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High) boosted Gannon's lead with a fall at 6:41 in his 157 lb. bout against Aliazer Alicea. Richner recorded three takedowns with the final one leading to the pin. He improved to 13-5 with his second fall in less than 24 hours.

Unfortunately, that was the last win the Golden Knights would be able to muster. The Gimbor brothers recorded decisions at 165 and 174 lbs. Bailey Gimbor, ranked 11th by The Open Mat and 12th by the NWCA, won by a 6-0 score over Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) at 165 lbs.

Redshirt freshman Patrick Jackson (Harpers Ferry, WV/Spring Mills High) (No. 8 NWCA/11 TOM) met Dalton Gimbor in the lone bout featuring two nationally-ranked wrestlers. Gimbor, ranked 10th and 19th respectively, jumped out to an 8-0 lead then held off a late Jackson rally for a 9-5 decision as the score tightened to 19-9.

Second-ranked Matt Weinberg pinned freshman Gaetano Savelli (Kirtland, OH/Kirtland High) at 1:08 at 184 lbs. and when Wayne McIntyre won a 12-0 major decision over Eli Reese (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) (9-5) the team score was tied at 19-19.

Until a few weeks ago that would have meant top-ten ranked Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) taking the mat with the match on the line at heavyweight. With Crosby out Daeshawn Larry (Macclenny, Fla./Baker County) was recently added to the team. A senior better known as a lineman on the football team, took the mat for the first time last night at East Stroudsburg. He picked up a forfeit win. In his first true match he a was pinned by Freddie Retter at 1:02.

The Golden Knights are back in action for their final home dual on Sunday, February ninth hosting nationally-ranked Ashland.
