Atwell, Morgan Named Gannon Student-Athletes of the Week

ERIE, Pa. – Volleyball player Lauren Atwell (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) and men's basketball player Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia/Marist Catholic College North Shore) have been selected as the Gannon University Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of December 7. This marks the 14th week honoring Gannon's Student-Athlete of the Week and encompasses events through Sunday as the fall semester winds down.

Atwell came up big at the net to lead the Golden Knights to a second straight Atlantic Regional championship and a trip to the upcoming Elite Eight. In essence, head coach Matt Darling "saved" Atwell in the 3-0 regional quarterfinal win over No. 8 seed Fayetteville State as she played in just one game.

But the 6-foot-3 middle blocker played a key role in the semifinals and finals. In a 3-1 semifinal win over No. 4 Pitt-Johnstown the junior contributed nine blocks for a .600 hitting percentage and was part of a big effort at the net for the Golden Knights. She had a block solo and two block solos as GU totaled four block solos and 10 block assists.

Gannon met Indiana (Pa.), the number three seed in the, in Saturday's regional championship match. The Golden Knights would dominate in straight sets by scores of 25-15, 25-15, 25-20. They totaled three block solos and 14 block assists with Atwell finishing with one and four, respectively. She added seven kills and a .700 hitting percentage.

Morgan, one of half of Gannon's twin brothers on the men's basketball team, scored a season-high 25 points as the Golden Knights improved to 6-1 with a 91-79 win at Shepherd. The 25 points also matched his career high, a total he scored as a freshman at St. Cloud State. The 6-foot-4 swingman made 9-of-12 shots and was a perfect 7-for-7 at the line in 29 minutes. He added four rebounds and two steals.
