Respecki's Eighth Goal of Season Earns 1-1 Tie with IUP

ERIE, Pa. – The calendar said October but Saturday's Gannon-Indiana (Pa.) women's soccer match had a postseason feel to it. The Golden Knights saw their perfect season come to an end but used a Brooklyn Respecki (McKean, Pa./General McLane) goal in the 76th minute for a 1-1 tie.

Gannon had climbed to sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Div. II Top 25. The Golden Knights are now 8-0-1 and 5-0-1 while IUP is 6-1-2 and 4-1-2, respectively.

THE KNIGHT CAP
  • IUP Scores First: Following a scoreless first half Indiana (Pa.) opened the scoring just over four minutes into the second half on Elle Smith's goal from long distance. It was just the second time Gannon trailed this year, but both have come in the last eight days. A week ago Pitt-Johnstown score first before the Holden Knights pulled away for a 3-1 win.
  • Respecki says Free is for Me as Well:  IUP's goal came following a free kick and Gannon took advantage of a free kick to knot the score at 1-1. Brooklyn Respecki (McKean, Pa./General McLane) did the honors, blasting home her eighth goal of the season over the head of SRU goalie Sarah Gatz at 75:26.
  • Respecki Nearing Fourth Place in Career Goals: Respecki now has eight goals this season and 33 for her career. That is one goal shy of Erin Cray who is fourth all-time with 34 goals. The junior has had a point in the last six matches and eight of nine overall.
  • Dominant on the Stat Sheet: Gannon once again proved dominant in shots, totaling 13 each half. While Gannon had 26 shots IUP was held to five shots. In addition the Golden Knights had eight corner kicks to nine for the Crimson Hawks.
  • Morgan up to Challenge: With just five shots Morgan Sinan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) wasn't challenged much by IUP.  But the graduate student was forced to come up with two bug plays in the final minutes. With just over five minutes to play she came off her line to smother a breakaway. Sinan had three saves in all.
