BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – Gannon had a chance to clinch the number one seed in the WWPA's East Region on Saturday at the Salem Invitational with a win over McKendree but the Golden Knights will now have to wait until Sunday. McKendree handed Gannon a 19-16 loss but the Golden Knights came back to win a shootout vs. Salem to earn a split in the day's matches. Gannon won 28-22 setting a school record for goals.     
  
The Golden Knights must now wait to see what happens when McKendree and Salem meet on Sunday. They will play twice, meeting Mercyhurst at 10:30 a.m. and Washington & Jefferson at 3:00 p.m. Gannon finished at 3-1 in WWPA action.

THE KNIGHT CAP 
GAME 1 vs. McKendree
  • Golden Knights Split Series with McKendree:  Gannon and McKendree split the two regular season matches with the Golden Knights holding on for 1 5-14 win two weeks ago.   
  • Third-Quarter Surge Does in Gannon: Gannon and McKendree were tied at 11-11 two minutes into the third quarter. The Bearcats scored four straight goals to take the lead for good and after a goal by Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) they added three more goals for an 18-12 lead.
  • Nikiforos a Force:  Nikiforos Liantziris (Athens, Greece/) paced the Golden Knights with five goals and an assist for six points. Kotskar contributed five points on four goals and an assist.  
GAME 2 vs. Salem
 
  • Goals Aplenty: Gannon set a single-game record for goals with 28. The previous record was 26 on two occasions.  
  • Golden Knights Recover from Big Deficit: Salem outscored Gannon 8-1 from late in the first quarter until late in the second and held a 12-8 just prior to halftime. The Golden Knights roared back with a huge third quarter, outscoring Salem 12-3. Like Salem, the Golden Knights used their own 8-1 run as seven different players scored. They led 21-14 after three quarters and tacked on seven more goals in the final eight minutes.
  • Goals Aplenty: Nine different Golden Knights scored a goal with Victor Volant's (Fuveau, France/) 6-goal, 2-assist effort leading the way. Rajmund Farsang (Eger, Hungary/), Dillon Shaw (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) and Liantziris contributed four goals apiece, with Liantziris assisting on three goals.
