Volleyball Sweeps California (Pa.) on Alumni Night

The Gannon volleyball team rolled to its sixth home sweep of the season Friday night, defeating California (Pa.) 3–0 at the Highmark Events Center.

The Golden Knights improved to 15–4 overall and 6–0 in PSAC West play, while the Vulcans dropped to 15–5 overall and 2–3 in conference action.

Gannon remained unbeaten at home while putting on a strong showing in front of alumni and fans during Alumni Night, which also featured a bake sale to benefit Make-A-Wish.

"It was fun to have former players of all generations back to watch," said head coach Matt Darling. "The program wasn't where it is now when they played, so I'm glad they got to see the team play well, and to see the facility. It was just a great night overall."

THE KNIGHT CAP
  • Unbeaten at Home: Gannon improved to a perfect 6–0 inside the Highmark Events Center this season.
  • Williams Leads the Way: Abbey Williams (Chicago, Ill./Mother Mcauley Liberal Arts) posted a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs, pacing a balanced Golden Knight attack.
  • Balanced Offense: The team hit .366 overall, with Sydney Wake (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson) and Brooke Gwiazda (Frankfort, Ill./Peotone) adding 11 kills apiece.
  • Setter Command: Bengisu Arslan (Ankara, Turkey/Private Çankaya Doga Anatolian) directed the offense with 38 assists while adding four service aces and eight digs.
  • Defensive Control: Alexis Fowler (Cranberry Township, PA/Eden Christian Academy) anchored the back row with 15 digs as Gannon limited Cal to just a .055 attack percentage.
  • Block Party: The Golden Knights dominated at the net, finishing with eight team blocks, including five in the final set — to stifle the Vulcans' attack.
  • Team Serving: Gannon racked up eight aces, including three in the final frame to close out the sweep.
  • Community Connection: Alumni Night welcomed back former Gannon volleyball student-athletes and raised funds for Make-A-Wish through a bake sale.
"We'll take the win no matter how it comes, but having a 3–0 victory gives us a little more rest heading into tomorrow against Seton Hill," Darling said. "Cal has been playing great volleyball — 15 wins and a vastly improved program from last year. Our scouting report emphasized putting pressure on them with our serve to create scoring chances, and I thought our offense was very efficient tonight."
