Ujfalvi, Phillips Win Titles at PA State Tournament

Ujfalvi named Co-Most Outstanding Wrestler

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) and Bella Phillips (Bellingham, Wash./Squalicum High School) brought home first place finishes to lead the Gannon women's wrestling team to a fourth-place finish in the PA State Tournament hosted by East Stroudsburg on Sunday.

Not only did Ujfalvi capture the gold medal at 138 lbs. she was named the Co-Most Outstanding Wrestler along with East Stroudsburg's Olivia Klein, who was the 103 lb. champion.

East Stroudsburg finished as the team champion out of 11 teams with a total of 94 points. Ursinus was second with 76.5 points and York third with 62 points. Gannon totaled 60.5 points to edge Delaware Valley (59) for fourth place.

Ujfalvi was one of three Golden Knights to reach the finals and one of two to come away as champions. Bella Phillips (Bellingham, Wash./Squalicum High School) was crowned the champion at 180 lbs. while Jada Badayos-Chaves (Odenton, Md./Arundel High) finished as the runner-up at 103 lbs.

A total of seven Golden Knights were place-winners. Hannah McCarley (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda High) came in third at 124 lbs., while Brielle Larsen (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) and Christina Chavez (Chandler, Ariz./Arizona College Preparatory) came in fourth at 117 and 207 lbs. Chloe Kitagawa (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) took home seventh place at 103 lbs.

Ujfalvi, a junior who came in ranked 17th by The Open Mat, won by technical submission in the 138 lb. finals over East Stroudsburg's Ruth Ansah, 10-0 at 1:53. In fact, she won four matches on the day, all against East Stroudsburg wrestlers. She won her first match by fall, then picked up a 7-0 decision over Ruth Rivera in the quarterfinals. She reached the finals with a 6-1 decision over Gianna Amendola of ESU in the semifinals.

Phillips, a freshman, won by technical submission 10-0 at 2:14 over Emma Helverson of Delaware Valley in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals she also won by technical submission, 11-0 at 3:00 over Gianna Perez of Ursinus. In the finals Phillips bested Allison Brandt of Ursinus, winning by fall in just 20 seconds.

Badayos-Chavez opened with a fall in the quarterfinals at 103 lbs. The freshman faced Mandy Gavares of Ursinus in the semifinals. She advanced to the finals with a fall at 1:14. Klein pinned her at 4:16 in the finals.

Gannon returns to action next Sunday, February 2 at Lock Haven. The Golden Knights will wrestle duals against the Bald Eagles and Ursinus.
