Free Throw Woes, Turnovers Lead to 79-72 Loss at Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – For the second Saturday in a row the Gannon men's basketball team tasted defeat on the road. The Golden Knights saw their 29-game winning streak against PSAC competition come to an end with a 79-72 loss at Seton Hill. Gannon falls to 16-4 and 11-1 in the PSAC West with the loss while Seton Hill improved to 12-8 and 5-7, respectively.

The Golden Knights came in ranked ninth in the D2CSC Div. II Top 25 and 23rd in the NABC poll. But they have been battling injuries all year and on Saturday were not only missing starting guard Justin DeBuck (Broward County, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) for the sixth straight game but were also without starting forward Tasman Goodrick (Sydney, Australia/St. Joseph's College). Goodrick is averaging a double-double.

That may be part of the reason Gannon's high-scoring is currently not running on all cylinders. The Golden Knights came in ranked fifth in Division II in scoring offense at 95.5 ppg. but was held in the 70's for the second time in three games.

Saturday's game at Seton Hill featured a tie and six lead changes. In maybe the most telltale sign, Seton Hill outscored Gannon 34-20 in points off turnovers, always a Gannon staple the last two years. The Griffins used a 12-0 run to take the lead for good. Gannon would pull to within three late but missed a pair of 3-pointers.

Gannon faces another tough challenge on Wednesday, Jan. 29 when Clarion plays at the Highmark Events Center. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Gannon used a 10-0 run to go ahead 25-18 with six minutes left in the first half. Pace Prosser (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) scored the first five points and Ernest Shelton (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) accounted for the last five. After leading by as much as eight points Gannon took a 38-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Golden Knights built the lead to eight points on three occasions, the last at 46-38 four minutes into the second half. With the score 48-42 Seton Hill scored 12 points in a row to go up by six at 54-48 with 12:53 remaining.

The Griffins never trailed after that and built their lead to ten points at 71-61 at the 5:26 mark. Gannon slowly cut into the deficit and pulled to within three on Prosser's 3-pointers that went in and out and in to make the score 75-72 with 1:30 left. The Golden Knights forced a miss but Shelton's 3-pointer was off the mark with a minute left. Mike Montano (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) grabbed the offensive rebound but Prosser's contested three was off the mark. Camden Brewer made two free throws with 10 seconds remaining and Brewer's layup at the buzzer closed the scoring.

BY THE NUMBERS
Gannon shot over 50 percent for the game at 51.7 percent (30-of-58) but was just 5-of-20 on 3-pointers and struggled at the line, finishing 7-of-18. The Golden Knights were also guilty of 20 turnovers. Seton Hill committed 21 turnovers but the Griffins held a 34-20 advantage in points off turnovers. Seton Hill was also above 50 percent at 53.7 percent (29-of-54) but made 9-of-21 from beyond the arc and was 13-of-18 at the charity stripe.

With starting forward Tasman Goodrick (Sydney, Australia/St. Joseph's College) missing the game Mike Montano (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) came off the bench to post his second straight strong effort. The 6-foot-7 swingman made 9-of-11 field goals to finish with a season-high 20 points. He added seven rebounds and three assists.

Ernest Shelton (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) added 17 points, going 3-of-9 on 3-pointers, and pulled down seven rebounds. Pace Prosser (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley), a 6-foot-2 guard, ended up leading the team with nine rebounds and had six assists. Victor Desmond (Onalaska, Wisc./Onalaska) contributed 15 points.

Last year's PSAC West Freshman of the Year, Keldrick Curtis, led Seton Hill with 24 points and nine rebounds.
