Golden Knights Celebrate Senior Night, Return to Highmark Events Center with 36-12 Win over Delaware Valley

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's wrestling team celebrated Senior Night with an impressive 36-12 win over Delaware Valley on Friday night. The match was the first for the Golden Knights in the renovated Highmark Events Center. Gannon had not competed in the facility since December 3, 2023.
 
Prior to Friday's match with Delaware Valley head coach Erin Vandiver and assistant coach Chad Vandiver honored six seniors on Senior Night. They included: Nyla Burgess (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering High School), Ariana Gonzalez (Cypress, Calif./John F. Kennedy), Brielle Larsen (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional), Julianne Mocchia, Kat Pendergrass (Bracey, Va./South Granville (N.C.)), and Jackie Sandquist (Humble, Texas/Kingwood Park).
 
The Golden Knights then went out and jumped ahead 28-1.  Jada Badayos-Chavez opened the match with a fall at 2:53 at 103 lbs. to improve 7-4. After a forfeit at 110 lbs.

Pendergrass moved down a weight class to 117 lbs. and won a 12-4 decision over Josey Wehr. She was the first of three seniors to win on the evening, improving to 23-4. Pendergrass is ranked 15th at 110 lbs.
 
Larsen then moved down to 124 lbs. and needed just 26 seconds for the pin to improve to 9-4. She is ranked 18th at 117 lbs.
 
That would be the first of three straight falls for the Golden Knights as the lead ballooned to 28-1. In a back and forth match at 131 lbs., Zoe Gaetjens (Mogadore, Ohio/Mogadore) jumped out to a 6-0 lead only to fall behind 10-8 in the second period. She would end the match with a fall at 5:28 to even her record at 4-4.
 
Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School), ranked 17th at 138 lbs., then took the mat and needed 30 seconds to win by fall. Ujfalvi is now 16-5.
 
Delaware Valley picked up its first win of the evening with a 10-0 technical submission at 2:53 by Lilly Kinder over Kate Wood (Carlsbad, CA/San Marcos High School).
 
Gannon would win the next two bouts by identical 12-2 scores. Nyla Burgess (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering High School) survived a scare after jumping out to an 8-0 lead before ending her 160 lb. match at 2:25. Burgess is now 16-6 and ranked 12th. Bella Phillips (Bellingham, Wash./Squalicum High School) followed with a 12-2 technical submission at 3:09 at 180 lbs. It left the ninth-ranked senior with a 28-6 record.
 
The night ended with Delaware Valley's Sophia Pollack winning by fall at 0:34 over Christina Chavez (Chandler, Ariz./Arizona College Preparatory).
 
Gannon returns to the mats next Sunday, January 26 competing in the Pa. State Tournament at East Stroudsburg University.
