Women's Wrestling Match Preview: Golden Knights to Celebrate Senior Night Hosting Delaware Valley at Highmark Events Center

First Meeting

ERIE, Pa. – The last time the Gannon women's wrestling team wrestled at the Highmark Events Center was Dec. 3, 2023. The Golden Knights defeated D'Youville that day. Now they return to find a spanking new home after over a year of renovations.
 
The Highmark Events Center reopened on Wednesday with the men's and women's basketball teams hosting Slippery Rock in a doubleheader. Now it's wrestling's turn. The women's wrestling team hosts Delaware Valley on Friday, January 17 with the wrestling set to get underway at 7:00 p.m. On Saturday the men's wrestling team will host the Gannon Quad.
 
Prior to Friday's match with Delaware Valley head coach Erin Vandiver and assistant coach Chad Vandiver will honor six seniors on Senior Night. They include; Nyla Burgess (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering High School), Ariana Gonzalez (Cypress, Calif./John F. Kennedy), Brielle Larsen (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional), Julianne Mocchia, Kat Pendergrass (Bracey, Va./South Granville (N.C.)), and Jackie Sandquist (Humble, Texas/Kingwood Park).
 
Both Gannon and Delaware Valley competed in the Ursinus Duals last weekend. The Golden Knights finished with three wins in four matches, defeating Misericordia (47-0), York (Pa.) (39-6), and Muhlenberg (47-2) while dropping a 25-21 decision to then 17th-ranked East Stroudsburg. That left Gannon with a 10-1 record, a new school record for dual wins in a season. Gannon is ranked 15th by The Open Mat and 22nd in the NWCA Top 25.
 
Delaware Valley also won three of its four matches and has a 6-7 record. The Aggies and Gannon wrestled two common opponents, with Delaware Valley State also defeating Muhlenberg (39-10) and losing to East Stroudsburg (36-11). This is the first meeting between the two teams.
 
While injuries may dictate some changes, Vandiver can call on no fewer than six wrestlers showing up in the national rankings. Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) is the lone Golden Knight ranked in both the NWCA and The Open Mat rankings. Competing at 124 lbs. Bazemore is ranked seventh by The Open Mat and eighth by the NWCA. However, she sat out the Ursinus Duals and will likely miss the Delaware Valley dual as well.
 
Bella Phillips (Bellingham, Wash./Squalicum High School) (27-6) comes in ranked ninth by The Open Mat at 180 lbs., with Burgess No. 12 at 160 lbs. Kat Pendergrass (Bracey, Va./South Granville (N.C.)) is No. 15 at 110 lbs., Lily Ujfalvi No. 17 at 138 lbs. and Brielle Larsen (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) No. 18 at 117 lbs.
