Watkins' First Career Goal, Sinan's Shutout lead No. 5 Golden Knights to 1-0 win over Concord

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Gannon women's soccer team improved to 2-0 with a narrow 1-0 win over Concord in the second match of the KU Invitational hosted by Kutztown. The Golden Knights, ranked fifth in the United Soccer Coaches Division II preseason poll, opened the season with a 3-1 triumph over No. 20 Charleston (WV).

Then lone goal of the match came courtesy of freshman Jessie Watkins (Bowie, Md./Bowie), who headed in a turnover by the Concord goalkeeper midway through the first half. It was her first career goal. Like Charleston a member of the Mountain East Conference, Concord was picked to finish third in the MEC preseason.

The Golden Knights now return home for three straight games at McConnell Family Stadium beginning with the first PSAC West match on Wednesday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m.

How it Happened:
  • The lone goal of the match came courtesy of a critical error by Concord goalkeeper Maddie Loughborough. The Mountain Cats played the ball back to Loughborough midway through the first half, and Loughborough looked to swing the ball out to her left. Instead, her kick was low and headed by Gannon's Jessie Watkins (Bowie, Md./Bowie). The freshman was coming up to pressure Loughborough and she ended up heading the ball into the Concord goal for her first career goal at the 21:36 mark.
By the Numbers:
  • The 2-0 start is the first for the Golden Knights since the 2019 team also won its first two contests.
  • Both teams finished with 10 shots. However, Gannon goalkeeper Morgan Sinan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) found herself under fire as Concord had an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. A graduate student, Sinan finished with her seventh career shutout, recording four saves.
  • Brooklyn Respecki (McKean, Pa./General McLane) led Gannon with four shots, including two on goal.
Next for the Golden Knights:
Gannon begins a stretch of three straight matches at home beginning with a match vs. Edinboro on Wednesday, September 11. That match gets underway at 7:00 p.m.  That's followed by a Saturday, September 14 match vs. Pitt-Johnstown and Wednesday, September 18 match against Clarion.
