No. 2 Gannon, Cal Battle to Scoreless Tie as Sinan Records Fourth Shutout

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Gannon women's soccer team suffered its first blemish in 2024, albeit the Golden Knights are still undefeated. California (Pa.), with goalkeeper Emily Oimet coming up with several big saves late, shut down the Gannon attack as the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie.

The Golden Knights came in ranked second in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 and now stand at 5-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the PSAC. California (Pa.) is now 3-3-2 and 2-2-1 after stopping a six-game losing streak to Gannon. The Golden Knights are still 11-0-2 against the Vulcans in the last 13 meetings.

Neither team mustered many threats in the first half as both teams had two shots apiece. Gannon did have four corner kicks compared to none for the Vulcans.

With the score tied in the final ten minutes Gannon looked to press the action and had several strong scoring opportunities. Oimet came up with a pair of big saves, with just over minutes to play on a shot by Jessie Watkins (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and another by GU leading scorer Brooklyn Respecki (McKean, Pa./General McLane) with less than a minute remaining. Oimet finished with four saves.

Gannon's Morgan Sinan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) was also stellar in goal, recording her fourth shutout of the season. The graduate student had two saves, including a key one on a breakaway with less than minutes remaining.

Gannon held a 9-3 advantage in shots along with showing six corner kicks to none for Cal.

The Golden Knights play the middle game of a three-game road trip on Wednesday, October 2 at Slippery Rock. The match gets underway at 4:00 p.m.
