Trio of Hurlers Shut Down California (Pa.) in Game Two as Gannon Earns Split with Vulcans

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon rode a strong pitching performance from three hurlers to a doubleheader split with California (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon. The two teams met for the second time in three days, with this twinbill taking place at McConnell Family Stadium.

The Vulcans used an eight-run fifth inning for a 9-3 win in the opener. Gannon came back in the nightcap for a 3-2 win thanks to a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and strong pitching from the trio of Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville), Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) and Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny).

The Golden Knights are now 5-20 overall and 3-9 in the PSAC West after splitting the four-game series with the Vulcans. Cal came in tied for first place in the Western Division and is now 19-8 and 8-4, respectively.

Gannon will play a doubleheader at D'Youville on Tuesday, April 9 before returning to PSAC West action with four games against crosstown rival Mercyhurst on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13.

Game 1 – California (Pa.) 9, Gannon 3
The two teams were locked in a tight battle before the Vulcans erupted for eight runs in the top of the fifth inning. They bunched together six hits, three hit batters, and two walks to take a 9-3 lead. Cal scored in the opening inning against Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) on a two-out double, but the Golden Knights struck for three runs in the bottom of the third. Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) and Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) opened the inning with singles and Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) followed with his second home run of the season, a three-run blast over the netting in right field. Gannon would manage just two hits the rest of the way.

Game 2 – Gannon 3, California (Pa.) 2
Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville), Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) and Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) limited Cal to just three hits and Gannon pushed across the tying an winning runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Golden Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) singled and stole second. He would score on a double off the netting in right field by Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin). Cal answered with single runs in the second and fourth innings but Boynar held the Vulcans at bay through five innings. The big freshman righthander would pick up the win when the Golden Knights struck for two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) drew a leadoff walk and Wible followed with a single to center. Bielanin would end up at third when the centerfielder bobbled the ball. After an out freshman Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) dropped a single into left center to drive in Bielanin. Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) followed with a single through the left side to drive in Wible with what would be the winning run. Boynar allowed two hits and a walk in five innings while striking out one. Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) pitched a one-two-three sixth inning with one strikeout. Heda coach DJ Cannon summoned Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) for the seventh inning. The senior lefthander dodged a jam for his second save of the season. Cal opened the inning with a single before Schott retired the next two batters. A walk put the tying run on second base but Schott ended the game with a strikeout. Wible and Koroly each had a pair of hits.
