Gannon Uses 15-Hit Attack to Win Game One vs. PSAC West-Leading California (Pa.)

WASHINGTON, Pa. – A young Gannon team came within three outs of sweeping PSAC West-leading California (Pa.) on Friday. The two teams met in the first of back-to-back doubleheaders at Wild Things Park in Washington, Pa.

Gannon matched its season high with 15 hits in the opener to come away with a 7-3 victory behind the efforts of four pitchers. The win snapped a three-game losing streak. The Golden Knights appeared on their way to a sweep of the Vulcans, rallying for a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Gannon was unable to collect the final three outs as Cal scored four times for an 8-7 win.

The split leaves Gannon at 4-19 overall and 2-8 in the PSAC West, while Cal is now 17-8 and 7-3, respectively. The two teams will play the second of their two twinbills on Sunday at McConnell Family Stadium. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.

Game 1 – Gannon 7, California (Pa.) 3
Gannon matched its season-high with 15 hits as five batters had multiple hits. Matt Graeber (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) made his first start of the season and picked up the win, combing with three relievers to limit Cal to six hits. The Golden Knights struck for a run in the top of the first. With one out Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) tripled to right center. An out later Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) drove in Gagnon with a single to left center. Cal answered with a run in the bottom of the inning as starter Matt Graeber (Washington, Pa./Canon-McMillan) battled control issues. The Golden Knights responded with three runs in the top of the second. Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) opened the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second. The freshman catcher scored on an RBI single to right by Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep). Colvin moved to third on Miguel Vega's (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) base hit and both came around to score on Alex Bemis' (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) two-run double down the left field line. Graeber, meanwhile, settled in and held the Vulcans scoreless over the next three innings before Cal finally scored twice in the fifth inning to knock Graeber out of the game. Gannon added an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Bemis led off the inning with his second double of the game and moved to third on a wild pitch. The freshman was thrown out at home as Gagnon reached on a fielder's choice. Gagnon stole second and scored on Wible's two-out RBI single to make it 5-3.  With two outs in the top of the seventh the Golden Knights added two more runs. Colvin reached on a bunt single and Vega followed with his xx home run of the season, a blast to right field. Graeber went 4.1 innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out a pair. The big righthander picked up his first win of the season. Logan Ayes closed out the fifth inning, with Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) throwing a scoreless sixth inning and Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) getting the final three outs. Bemis was 4-for-5 with 2 RBIs while Vega was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Colvin was 3-for-4, with Wible going 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) was 2-for-4.

Game 2 – California (Pa.) 8, Gannon 7
The Golden Knights rallied with two runs in the sixth and seventh innings but Cal scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to hand Gannon a heart-breaking defeat. Gannon trailed 4-3 entering the sixth inning. A Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) single and Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) put runners on second and third. Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) drove in Bielanin with a ground out and Chris Mullin's single scored Wible. The Golden Knights added two more runs in the seventh. Bielanin accounted for the first run with a ground out and Costello plated the second with another ground out. Gannon was unable to complete the sweep as the Vulcans scored four times on three hits, two walks and an error. The winning run scored on a sacrifice fly. Following a scoreless first inning the two teams combined for seven runs in the second. Gannon opened the inning with a Wible single and a Costello walk. Both moved up on a balk and scored on Mullins' single up the middle. Mullins scored two batters later on a Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) double down the line. Cal answered with four runs in the bottom half of the frame as wildness plagued starter Carson Whiteman (Kane, Pa./Kane Area). Whiteman walked five in the inning before Dylan Crowley (Eden, N.Y./Hamburg) came in and got the final out with runners on first and second. Mullins ended the game going 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. Wible was 2-for-3 with a pair if runs scored. Costello drove in two runs.
