Bielanin, Bemis Drive in Five Runs Apiece as Gannon Posts 22-10 Win at Walsh

CANTON, Ohio – For the second week in a row the Gannon baseball team posted an impressive non-conference, mid-week road victory. Last Tuesday it was an 11-6 win at seventh-ranked Ashland. A week later it was another win over a Great Midwest Athletic Conference team, this one high-scoring 22-10 victory at Walsh.

The victory boosted the Golden Knights to 10-31 with a four-game series coming up against Seton Hill to end the season. Gannon hosts the Griffins for two games on Thursday, May 2 at McConnell Family Stadium before concluding the season with two games in Greensburg, Pa. on Friday. Walsh dropped to 24-19 with the loss.

The season-high 22 runs were the most in at least 25 years and came courtesy of 18 hits and seven walks, with five Walsh errors mixed in. Every Gannon starter had at least one hit and one run scored, and every Golden Knight starter besides Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) drove in a run. Vega, meanwhile, scored three runs while going 1-for-3, adding two walks and two stolen bases.

The left side of the infield led the Golden Knight attack as third baseman Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and shortstop Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) each drove in five runs. Bielanin was 3-for-5 with three runs and a walk. Bemis was 3-for-7 with a pair of runs and hit his second home run of the season.

Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) also went 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs and a pair of runs batted in. The freshman first baseman hit his first career home run, a solo home run to start a 12-run sixth inning. Freshman Justin Weaver (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) was 2-for-5 with two runs and 2 RBIs while sophomore Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) was 2-for-5 with an RBI and scored four times. Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) drove in a pair of runs. Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) drove in three runs.

Neither team scored in the first two innings but they more than made up for it in the final seven innings. Gannon opened the scoring with a five-run third inning, but Walsh took a 6-5 lead after scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Gannon regained the lead for good with two runs in the fifth inning. The tying run scored on a Bielanin RBI single and Kerestes plated the winning run with an RBI groundout.

The Golden Knights exploded for 12 runs in the top of the sixth to build a 19-6 lead. Gannon sent 18 batters to the plate and had nine hits against four Walsh pitchers. Costello had a solo home run and RBI single in the inning while Bemis drove in three runs in the inning with a single and a two-run double.

The two teams combined for 32 runs and 34 hits, with Gannon finishing with 18 hits. The Golden Knights played error-free baseball while Walsh committed five miscues. They also used a combined 17 pitchers with seven pitchers toeing the rubber for the Golden Knights. Logan Oakes (Kent, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) threw a scoreless first inning and was awarded the win while Cory Shields followed with two scoreless frames. Josh Quartley (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) also threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
