Gagnon's Grand Slam Powers Gannon to Split with Clarion on Senior Day

ERIE, Pa. – With several seniors leading the way the Gannon baseball team earned its second straight split with Clarion on Saturday. The two teams met at McConnell Family Stadium on Senior Day for the Golden Knights.

Gannon claimed the opener by a 7-3 score as the Golden Knights jumped out to a quick lead thanks to Kieran Gagnon's (Mono, Ontario/Westside) first-inning grand slam. Gagnon was one of 16 seniors honored following the doubleheader. Clarion's Reilly Shafer threw a five-hitter in the nightcap as the Golden Eagles prevailed 5-1.
Gagnon had missed a good portion of the season with an injury. The senior had driven in just one run all year before his grand slam to punctuate Senior Day.

The Golden Knights enter the final week of the 2024 season with a 9-31 record and are now 6-18 in the PSAC West. Clarion is 14-31 and 8-16, respectively. Gannon has five games remaining on the schedule. Head coach DJ Cannon's team plays at Walsh in a single nine-inning game on Tuesday, April 30 before wrapping up the season with a four-game set vs. Seton Hill on May 2-3.

Game 1 – Gannon 7, Clarion 3
Gannon never trailed after Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) blasted a grand slam six batters into the game for a 4-0 lead. With one out Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) reached on a double. A Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) single put runners on 1st and 3rd before a walk to Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) loaded the bases. Clarion nearly got out of the inning with a popout but Gagnon cleared the bases with his blast to left field for his first home run of the season. Gannon tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second. The first run scored on a wild pitch and Bielanin's second hit plated the second. The lead grew to 7-0 with a run in the fourth inning on a Bemis single. Clarion scored three runs in the top of the sixth but Cam Ward (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) came in and shut down a potential bigger inning with a flyout and strikeout. Gannon finished with eight hits with Gagnon going 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs and Bielanin at 2-for 4 with a run batted in. Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) scored twice while going 1-for-3. The freshmen tandem of Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) and Ward held the Golden Eagles to five hits. Boynar pitched into the sixth inning for the second straight game while improving to 3-2. The big right hander threw 5.1 hits, allowing five hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Ward pitched the final 1.2 innings with two strikeouts for his first career save.

Game 2 – Clarion 5, Gannon 1
Clarion's Reilly Shafer kept Gannon off-balance all game while throwing a complete game five-hitter. The Golden Eagles took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first but Gannon answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) opened with a single, moved up to second on a sacrifice and stole third. He scored on Alex Bemis' (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) 13th double of the season. Gannon had runners on second and third in the second inning but did not score. After that Shafer retired 15 of the final 16 batters he faced. Colvin ended the game 2-for-3. Gannon used six pitchers in the game, highlighted by two shutout innings with a strikeout by senior Corey Shields (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf).
