Harhai, Two Other Hurlers Lead Gannon to Split of Doubleheader at Clarion

CLARION, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team split its doubleheader at Clarion on Friday afternoon. The Golden Knights suffered a disappointing 7-6 loss in eight innings in the opener but came back to ride a strong pitching performance by three hurlers to a 3-1 win.

The twinbill split leaves the Golden Knights at 8-30 overall and 5-17 in the PSAC West. Clarion is 13-30 and 7-15, respectively. The two teams will meet in the second of their back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday at McConnell Family Stadium. Gannon will hold its Senior Day festivities after the second game. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.

Game 1 – Clarion 7, Gannon 6 (8 innings)
Gannon had a win snatched from it after going ahead 6-1 in the sixth inning. Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) gave Gannon a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the top of the third. Clarion answered with a run in the bottom of the third but a double play helped starter Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) escape further danger. The Golden Knights exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth, sending 11 batters to the plate and producing six hits. Freshman Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) drove in the first two runs with a one-out, two-run single. The lead grew to 4-1 on an RBI single to right by Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy). Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) drove in a fourth run in the inning with a groundout. Vega stole third and scored on Koroly's single. The bottom of the inning looked as if Clarion was going to come roaring back. The first four batters reached on two walks, an error and a hit by pitch, but Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) came in and shut the door. The redshirt freshman lefthander induced a double play followed by a popout to limit Clarion to just two runs. The Golden Knights were unable to get the final three outs, however. Clarion scored three runs, the last with two outs, to send the game into extra innings. The big blow was a Scott McManamon two-run homer. After Gannon did not score in the top of the eighth the Golden Knights got the first two outs in the bottom of the inning before a walk, stolen base and single produced the winning run. Koroly led Gannon with a 3-for-5 effort with 2 RBIs. Vega was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Schott threw into the sixth inning in his longest outing of the season. In five innings he allowed three unearned runs with six hits and three walks, striking out two.

Game 2 – Gannon 3, Clarion 1
Both teams managed just three hits but Gannon took advantage of four Clarion errors. The Golden Knights received strong pitching from three pitchers. Redshirt junior Nick Harhai (West Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) picked up his first career victory in his first career start. He went the first four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts. Logan Oakes (Kent, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) followed with two innings, allowing a hit and a run with two walks and three strikeouts. Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) closed out the win to pick up his first save. The junior allowed a walk in the seventh inning. Gannon created a run in the third inning without the benefit of a hit. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) walked, stole second, then stole third and came home on a bad throw to third. Gannon added a second run in the top of the fourth, again without a hit. Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) drove in the run with a sacrifice fly following a pair of Golden Eagles errors. Clarion cut the lead in half with a run in the fifth but the Golden Knights scored an insurance run in the sixth. A Clarion error once again played a role. Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) reached on a single but was erased on a fielder's choice. An Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) single moved Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) to second and Koroly would later score on an error. Bemis finished the game at 2-for-2 with an RBI while Colvin accounted for Gannon's other hit.
