Golden Knights Dial Long Distance to Sweep Edinboro for Second Time

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon hit five home runs on the day – actually six – to sweep Edinboro for the second time this season. The sweep took place at Gannon's McConnell Family Stadium for the second time, as well. The Golden Knights won the first game 9-2 thanks to three home runs, then hit two more in a 7-3 win in the nightcap.

The two teams were scheduled to play at Edinboro, but unexpected rains on Wednesday left Edinboro's field unplayable. The twinbill was eventually moved to Gannon and bumped back an hour to a 3:00 p.m. start.

Gannon has now won seven straight games and 12 of 13 to improve to 26-11 overall and 21-6 in the PSAC West. While the Golden Knights have clinched a PSAC Tournament berth the two losses did not help Edinboro's bids. The Fighting Scots dropped to 14-26 and 11-16 in league play.

The Golden Knights have two more doubleheaders remaining in the regular season. They play at Mercyhurst on Saturday, April 27 then have a makeup doubleheader at Pitt-Johnstown on Sunday, April 28.

Game 1 – Gannon 9, Edinboro 2
Gannon rode the strength of three home runs and strong pitching by Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) to the game one win. The Golden Knights ended the game with 15 hits compared to four for the Fighting Scots. Edinboro opened the scoring on a home run in the bottom of the first, but Gannon answered with three runs in the top of the second. Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) walked and Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) continued her torrid hitting with a double before freshman Jenna Clontz (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) drove a ball over the right center field fence for a three-run homer. It was her fifth of the season but first since March 3. Edinboro scored an unearned run in the third and the score stayed there until the top of the sixth. That's when Clontz hit her second home run of the game and sixth of the season to make it 4-2. The Golden Knights added two more runs in the inning on singles by Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) and Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford). They then pushed three more runs across in the seventh, but it could have been even more. Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) hit Gannon's third home run of the game and her third of the season in the inning and Gannon would have had a fourth if not for a base-running snafu. Bella Atherton (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) hit the ball of the fence but sprinted past Clontz who had not moved off second. Atherton ended up with a two-run single. Clontz ended the game at 3-for-3 with 4 RBIs while Atherton was 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic), Alaina Whipkey (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) added two hits apiece. Lenda, meanwhile, was once again spectacular in the circle. The junior won her 13th straight decision while improving to 14-2. She threw all seven innings allowing four hits without a walk and striking out six. She got stronger as the game wore on, retiring the final 14 batters she faced.

Game 2 – Gannon 7, Edinboro 3
Following two scoreless innings Gannon struck for two runs in the third inning, both with two outs. Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) doubled with two down and Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) scored Ryan with a single to center. A Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) single moved Mallozzi to third and Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) followed with Gannon's fourth straight hit to score Mallozzi. Olivia Eckels (Saint Marys, Pa./Saint Marys Area) gave Gannon a 3-0 lead with her first career home run. The freshman just recently took over at third base. Edinboro scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-1 but the Golden Knights answered with two more runs in the fifth to make it 5-1. Ryan opened the frame with a double and eventually scored on Vasi's triple. Jenna Clontz (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) stroked a two-out double for the final run of the inning. Gannon closed its scoring with two runs in the seventh on Girman's fourth home run in the last six games. The Fighting Scots would add two runs on a homer in the bottom of the inning against Vasi, who threw the final three innings to collect the save. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Girman ended the game going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs while Ryan and Clontz also had two hits. Freshman Katie Armstrong (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) improved to 4-2 while throwing the first four innings. She allowed just one hit with three walks and four strikeouts.
