With a sweep over crosstown rival Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon, the Gannon softball team has clinched the PSAC West title.
Gannon earned a 3-2 victory over the Lakers in game one, before belting out 12 hits including two home runs en route to an 8-2 win in the nightcap.
Gannon improved to 28-11 overall and 23-6 in the PSAC West, while Mercyhurst finished its 2024 campaign at 18-27 overall and 14-18 in the PSAC West.
How it Happened – Game 1
- Gannon struck first, plating a pair of runs to take an early, 2-0 lead. Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) hit an RBI single to shortstop, while an error from the Mercyhurst first baseman plated the second Gannon run.
- The Golden Knights final run of the game came in the second off an Alaina Whipkey (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) double to left field to make it, 3-0.
- A bases clearing double in the fifth saw Mercyhurst only trail 3-2 heading into the sixth.
- Mercyhurst looked to threaten in the sixth with a bases loaded opportunity but solid defense from Gannon shutdown the Laker rally.
- The Lakers looked to knot the score up at 3 off a two-out double, but a fly out to right field secured the Gannon 3-2 game one victory.

- Gannon finished the game with three runs on eight hits.
- Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) earned her 15th win in the circle after throwing a complete seven inning performance with six strikeouts. Lenda's 15 wins on the season also puts her 13th in program history in wins in a season.
- Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) tallied two hits, an RBI and had a stolen base.
- Alaina Whipkey (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) belted a double and drove in a run.
- Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) finished with an RBI, while Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) had two hits and a run.
- Bella Atherton (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) and Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) also added hits to conclude the offensive effort.
How it Happened – Game 2
- Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) got the scoring started with a home run in the first to take an early, 1-0 lead.
- The Golden Knights used a three-run, three hit, third inning to stretch its lead 4-0. Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) got the rally going with a solo home run, while Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) reached first on an error from the left fielder that plated two runs.
- In the fourth, Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) hit a two-run RBI double to center field to make it, 6-0.
- An RBI ground out in the fourth to second base saw the Lakers earn their first run in the game making it, 6-1.
- Gannon's final two runs of the game came in the fifth. The Golden Knights took advantage of an error from the Laker's third baseman and then a Katie Sidare (Rochester, N.Y./Victor Central) double widen the lead, 8-1.
- Mercyhurst scored its final run in the seventh of an error, but it wouldn't be enough as Gannon secured the 8-2 win.

- Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) tallied her seventh win of the year after firing four strikeouts in seven innings of action. Vasi also had two hits and drove in two runs.
- Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) added two hits, two RBIs, and a run, while Katie Sidare (Rochester, N.Y./Victor Central) added a hit and an RBI.
- Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) finished with a hit and an RBI, while Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) notched two hits.
- Bella Atherton (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) added a hit as well to fuel the Gannon offensive surge.
