Gannon baseball team rallies for victory over No. 7-ranked Ashland

Vegas leads GU's 18-hit attack with four hits, three RBIs

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Gannon baseball team enjoyed one of the high points of its 2024 season on Tuesday when the Golden Knights rallied from a four-run deficit to beat No. 7-ranked Ashland.
 
The Golden Knights scored 10 runs over the final four innings as they escaped a 5-1 hole to claim an 11-6 victory over the Eagles in a nine-inning game at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field.
 
Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) had four hits and three RBIs to lead Gannon's 18-hit attack. His two-run triple in the seventh inning gave the Knights the lead for good at 6-5. He added an RBI single in the eighth inning.
 
Gannon improved to 7-29 as Ashland dropped to 34-7.
 
 
By the numbers:
 
The game took 3 hours, 27 minutes to play as Ashland made nine pitching changes while using 10 pitchers. No Ashland pitcher went more than 1 1/3 innings in the non-conference game.
 
Gannon's Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) each added three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Colvin also walked twice as he reached base five times.
 
Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added two hits and two RBIs, and Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) and Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) contributed two hits apiece.
 
Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) continued his hot hitting in the past three games with a hit, RBI, and two runs scored. Over the past three games, he is 5-for-9 with a home run, three RBIs, and four runs scored.
 
Freshman Cam Ward (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) was the starting pitcher for Gannon, but Ryan Bioni (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) picked up the pitching victory with two scoreless innings of relief.
 
GU's Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) closed the game with two scoreless, hitless innings as he struck out two and walked two.
 

What's ahead:
 
Gannon will return to action on Friday when it visits Clarion for a PSAC west doubleheader. The Golden Knights will host the Golden Eagles in a twinbill on Saturday.
