Rakow Homers to Highlight Gannon Twinbill with Slippery Rock

ERIE, Pa. – Then Gannon baseball team wrapped up its four-game series with Slippery Rock on Sunday afternoon with two games at McConnell Family Stadium. The Rock would end up sweeping Saturday's and Sunday's doubleheaders, prevailing 4-2 in Sunday's opener and 17-3 in the nightcap.
The Golden Knights dropped to 6-29 overall and are 4-16 in the PSAC West while SRU remained in the hunt for a playoff berth in the division at 14-6 while improving to 24-11 overall.

Gannon sent Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) to the mound in the opener and the freshman battled his way through five innings. After two shutout innings he allowed a run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. In the fourth the first four batters reached, scoring two runs, but he settled down to retire the next three batters without a run. Boynar allowed a home run to open the fifth but then he recorded his fourth strikeout and induced a pair of ground balls.

Lefthander Logan Oakes (Kent, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) relieved Boynar in the sixth and threw two shutout innings. He allowed one hit and struck out a pair.
The Gannon offense finally came alive in the sixth inning with a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 4-2. Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) opened the inning with a walk and moved to second on Miguel Vega's (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) bunt single. The two moved up when SRU starter Joey Purcell threw a pickoff attempt into center field, and then the centerfielder bobbled the ball, allowing Stangelo to score and Vegan to move to third. The senior second baseman scored on a two-out single by Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell).

The Golden Knights were retired in order in the seventh inning.

Gannon never recovered from a five-run first inning by Slippery Rock in the second game. The Rock added four runs in the second, three in the third and five more in the fourth. SRU would finish with 21 hits.

The Golden Knights got on the board in the first inning when Carson Wible's (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) single drove in Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic). Koroly had reached on a single.
Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) accounted for Gannon's other two runs when he drove a pitch far over the left field fence for his first home of the season in the sixth inning.

Gannon returns to action on Tuesday, April 23 with a nine-inning non-conference game at Ashland. The Golden Knights then return to PSAC action with four games against Clarion over the weekend. The first two games are at Clarion on Friday, April 26 before Gannon celebrates Senior Day with two games at McConnell Family Stadium on Saturday, April 27.
