Colvin's Walk-Off Grand Slam Leads Gannon to Split with Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa.Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) hit a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning as Gannon rallied to defeat crosstown rival Mercyhurst 10-8 in the opening game of Monday's doubleheader at McConnell Family Stadium. The Lakers would stage a rally of their own in the nightcap to edge the Golden Knights 11-10.

The doubleheader split left Gannon with a 6-25 overall record and 4-12 in the PSAC West. Mercyhurst is now 14-14 and 11-5 in the division.

After losing the opening two games of their four-game set with Mercyhurst on Saturday things certainly didn't look good for the Golden Knights when the Lakers 8-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Golden Knights pulled within 8-6 when Colvin stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. He proceeded to drive the ball over the left field fence for his first career home run and a walk-off grand slam at that.

Mercyhurst would return the favor to the Golden Knights in game number two. Thanks to a nine-run third inning Gannon led 10-3 after three innings. But the Lakers held Gannon scoreless the rest of the way and scored twice in the sixth inning for the 11-10 win.

The Golden Knights are back in action on Saturday, April 20 playing a doubleheader at Slippery Rock. On Sunday they will SRU for two games.

Game 1 – Gannon 10, Mercyhurst 8
The Lakers came out swinging and scored two runs in the first and two more in the second inning. Gannon answered with single runs on the second and third innings to trail 4-2. Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) got Gannon on the board in the bottom of the second with a home run to straight away center field, his third of the season. Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) walked with the bases loaded in the third to make it 4-2. Mercyhurst scored three times in the sixth and once more in the seventh for an 8-2 lead. The Golden Knights would score times in the seventh on just four hits but benefited from a pair of walks and two hit by pitches. The Lakers retired the first batter of the inning but the next eight Golden Knights reached base. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) drove in the first run with a bases loaded walk and another run scored on Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) RBI infield single. Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) made it 8-5 when he was hit by pitch. Following a pitching change Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) hit an RBI single to right to make it 8-6 and the bases remained loaded. That brought Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) to the plate. Colvin gave the Golden Knights a 10-8 win as he drove his first career home run over the left field fence. Both teams finished with 10 hits with four Golden Knights finishing with two hits. Colvin was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs. Costello and Wible were 2-for-3 with an RBI while Kerestes was 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) improved to 2-0 with 1.2 innings of relief.

Game 2 – Mercyhurst 11, Gannon 10
Gannon looked ready to record a sweep of the Lakers after a nine-run third inning gave the Golden Knights a 10-3 lead. Both teams scored a run in the second with Dom Costello's (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) sacrifice fly driving in Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) after Vega had singled and stolen second. The Lakers added two runs in the top of the third but Gannon combined six hits, two walks and two Mercyhurst errors for a nine-run third inning. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) drove in the first run with a single and a wild pitch and a pair of errors gave Gannon a 5-3 lead. A second wild pitch plated another run and Costello's single to right made it 7-3. Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) hit a sacrifice fly and Gannon scored two more runs with two outs in the inning. Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) hit an RBI single for the first and the second scored on Bielanin's ground rule double. Unfortunately Gannon had just two more hits the rest of the game. The Lakers made it 10-7 with four runs in the fourth and scored two runs in the fifth and sixth inning. The winning run scored on a throwing error. Gannon challenged in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs Colvin walked. He moved to third on Alex Bemis' (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) single to right but was left stranded there. Bemis, Koroly and Bielanin each had two hits, with Bielanin driving in a pair of runs.
