Gannon Uses Dominant Fourth Quarter to Rally for 19-17 Win at Mercyhurst

Stevens reaches 100 career goals, ties school record for draw controls

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon used a dominant fourth quarter to rally for a 19-17 win at Mercyhurst on Wednesday night in a PSAC West match. The victory is the second straight for the Golden Knights as they improved to 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the Western Division. Mercyhurst is now 2-8 and 1-5, respectively.

The Golden Knights fell behind the Lakers 6-2 midway through the first quarter. They would trail 8-4 after one period before pulling two goals at 10-8 at the half. Mercyhurst led 15-11 with just 38 seconds left in the third quarter before a goal by Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) with one second remaining made it 15-12 entering the final period.

The two teams exchanged goals over the first six minutes of the period as Mercyhurst led 16-13. Gannon responded with the next five goals. Morgan Allardi (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) started the run with her first goal of the season at 8:10. Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) scored two minutes later as the Golden Knights pulled to within 16-15.

Stevens won the ensuing draw control and 21 seconds later Madyson Schwartz (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) tied the match at 16-16, assisted by McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads). Gannon grabbed the lead for the first time in the contest at 17-16 with 4:17 remaining on Stevens' fifth goal of the match.

Gannon's lead grew to 18-16 with 3:16 left when Schwartz found the back of the net with Stevens assisting. Mercyhurst cut the lead to one at 18-17 with just over two minutes remaining on a free position goal. Gannon earned the draw control and with the play clock winding down Stevens scored the clinching goal with 40 seconds remaining.

Mercyhurst had one last gasp but Riley Finnegan's (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) save with just under 30 seconds to play. Finnegan made her third start in goal and improved to 3-0 while making 11 saves.

Gannon claimed the win despite being outshot by a 42-30 margin, including 19-5 in the opening period. Gannon, however, won the draw control battle 27-14.

Stevens paced the Golden Knights with six goals and an assist. The junior scored her 100th career goal in the second quarter and now has 105 career goals. She also had 13 draw controls to tie the school record.

Schwartz added four goals while McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) had two goals and two assists. Hepditch and Skylar Parsons added a pair of goals, with Hepditch winning seven draw controls.

Gannon will look to extend its winning streak to three matches on Saturday, April 13 when the Golden Knights play at Indiana (Pa.) to begin the second half of PSAC action.
