Gannon's Caringi closes Nationals just one win away from All-America status

All six GU qualifiers were eliminated at the NCWWC Championships on Friday

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Schyler Caringi (Earlton, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) finished one win short of All-America status as all six Gannon national qualifiers were eliminated on the opening day of the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships.

Caringi and Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) recorded wins on Day 1 of the NCWWC Championships, but each of the six Gannon wrestlers lost twice to top competition and bowed out of the meet at Alliant Energy PowerHouse.

Coach Erin Vandiver's team faced a barrage of injuries in her first season, leaving her without a full lineup late in the season despite a deep roster.

Caringi, a 170-pound sophomore, advanced the farthest for Gannon on Friday. After receiving a first-round bye, she claimed a quick 36-second pin against Alyssa Arana of Emmanuel. However, Caringi had to face No. 1-ranked Kylie Welker of Iowa in her next match. Welker recorded a fall in 1:32 to send Caringi to the consolation bracket.

Caringi's tournament came to an end one win short of the placement rounds and All-America status when Sacred Heart's Love Daley pinned her in 1:51. Caringi closed the year with a 21-8 record.

Bazemore picked up Gannon's other win of the day. After losing via technical fall in the first round, the 123-pound sophomore claimed a decision when she tied Alyssa Mahan of Presbyterian 6-6 and won on criteria. Bazemore turned in a solid effort in her next match, but Iowa's Ava Rose edged Bazemore 7-4 in an elimination match.

Gannon 143-pounder Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School), who placed fifth at Nationals in 2023, had some misfortune when she drew No. 1-ranked Alara Boyd of North Central in the first round. Ujfalvi lost a 10-0 technical fall, and she fell into the consolations, where she lost 7-5 to Cloe Charlesworth of Ursinus.

Gannon's Chloe Kitagawa (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) (101 pounds), Kealonie Vega (Kissimmee, Fla./Osceola) (109) and Juliana Cubias (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) (116) went 0-2 in the tournament and were eliminated.
