Golden Knights Overcome Adversity to Post First Win in Home Opener, Defeating Daemen 15-8

ERIE, Pa. – Tuesday's home opener with Daemen had a little bit of everything for the Gannon women's lacrosse team. When all was said and done the Golden Knights captured their first win of the season with a 15-8 win over the Saints. The Golden Knights are now 1-3 while Daemen fell to 0-4.

Even before the match began the Golden Knights faced adversity as starting goalkeeper Haleigh Manning (Milton, Ga./Cambridge) was injured in pre-game drills. The Golden Knights scored two quick goals for a 2-0 lead just over five minutes into the match and then the contest at McConnell Family Stadium was stopped with lightning in the area.

The two teams would sit in their locker rooms for a total delay of 1 hour, 12 minutes. When play resumed with a light rain falling Gannon jumped to a 6-1 lead before a late Daemen goal left the Golden Knights with a 6-2 lead at the half.

Daemen opened the second half with the first four goals to knot the score at 6-6 with 6:59 left in the third period. The Saints never would gain the lead, however, as Charlie Hunter (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg) scored second goal of the match at the 4:10 mark.

Gannon would score two more goals in the period, the first by Madyson Schwartz (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) and the second with just three seconds remaining on a free position shot Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic). Gannon would hold a 9-6 lead heading into the final period.

Hunter added her third goal early in the fourth period for a 10-6 lead. Daemen answered with a pair of goals to close the gap to 10-8 with just under ten minutes remaining.

The Saints would get no closer as Gannon scored the final five goals. Hepditch and Alyssa Lerch (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon Area) scored free position goals and Angie George (Brecksville, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) beat the shot clock to make it 13-8 with a goal with one second left. Skyler Parsons (Reading, Pa./Exeter Twp.) capped the win with a pair of goals in the final three minutes.

Hunter and Parsons led Gannon with three goals apiece. George, Hepditch and McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) accounted for two goals and Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) had a goal and two assists. Sophomore Riley Finnegan (Oviedo, Fla./Oviedo) replaced Manning in goal and finished with three saves.

Gannon doubled up Daemen in shots with 32-16. Daemen committed 16 turnovers and Gannon 14. The Golden Knights were successful on 12 of 14 clears.

Gannon returns to action on Tuesday, March 12 with its final non-conference match of the season, hosting Malone at 4:00 p.m. The Golden Knights' final 12 matches are against PSAC foes.
