ERIE, Pa. – Water polo player
Emma O'Gorman (Johannesburg, South Africa/St Stithians College) and wrestler
Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High) have been named the
Gannon University Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of March 5. The Gannon Student-Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Chick-fil-A of Erie.
Emma O'Gorman (Johannesburg, South Africa/St Stithians College), a freshman 2-meter, had eight goals, three assists, and two steals in two victories at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday as Gannon improved to 8-5. She helped the Golden Knights run their winning streak to six games.
O'Gorman had a goal and two steals as Gannon defeated Salem 9-8 in the opener. In the second match, a 19-11 win over W&J, she scored a season-high seven goals and had three assists.
Richner, a redshirt sophomore, earned his first trip to the NCAA Division II Championships by placing second at 157 pounds in Super Regional 1 on Saturday at Kutztown.
He opened the tournament by pinning Fairmont State's Kolton Parsons in 1:19 in the first round. He followed with a second pin, in 4:44, this time against Millersville's Kolton Parsons in the quarterfinals.
Richner's biggest win of the tournament came in the semifinals as he claimed a 12-3 major decision over nationally ranked Bailey Gimbor of Kutztown. With that win, Richner secured a berth in the NCAA Championships on March 15-16 in Park City, Kan.
Richner lost the title match 5-0 to Pitt-Johnstown's Cooper Warshel, but his three wins helped Gannon win the Super Regional 1 team title.
