Game Preview: Gannon women's lacrosse team to host Daemen on Tuesday in home opener

Golden Knights and Wildcats are both looking for their first win of the season

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team will look for its first victory of the season when it plays its home opener against Daemen on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Both teams will be seeking their first win of 2024 in their fourth game when they meet at 4 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium.
 
Coach Jennifer Pawlowski's Gannon team opened the season with back-to-back close losses, 13-11 at Georgian Court and 13-12 at Molloy. In both games, Gannon overcame sizable deficits to tie the score and then take the lead. In each case, GU's opponent scored the winning goal late in the fourth period.
 
On Saturday in a 15-9 loss to Bloomsburg, Gannon cut a first-half, seven-goal deficit to four goals twice in the second half but could not get closer.
 
 
Daemen's slow start:
 
The Wildcats have opened the season with three losses. Coach Dominique Hamman's team lost at Walsh (Ohio) 15-5 in its opener. Daemen then dropped a 20-8 game at home in Buffalo. The Wildcats went on the road on Saturday and dropped a 15-8 contest at Lock Haven.
 
In 2023, Daemen hosted Gannon and pulled out a 14-13 victory over the Golden Knights. Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) led Gannon with five goals, while Dana Bacher scored five goals for Daemen.
 
Sophomore midfielder Ella Bouley leads the Wildcats with six goals, three assists, and nine points this season. Junior midfielder Camryn Day and freshman midfielder Mikayla Myer have scored four goals apiece.
 

Gannon, by the numbers:
 
  • Junior midfielder Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) is off to a hot start for Gannon. She has team highs of 13 goals, two assists, and 15 points. She also paces the team with 22 draw controls and has added six ground balls and four caused turnovers.
  • Grad transfer Madyson Schwartz (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) ranks second on the team with six goals and seven points.
  • Sophomore midfielder Charlie Hunter (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg) has five goals and a team-high nine ground balls and has six caused turnovers.
  • Emma Uhrig (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Waterloo Collegiate) leads GU with seven caused turnovers and has six ground balls.
  • Junior goalie Haleigh Manning (Milton, Ga./Cambridge) has 34 saves and 39 goals allowed in three games.
