LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team finally ran out of comebacks on Saturday.
Coach
Jennifer Pawlowski's Golden Knights rallied from several deficits to either tie the game or take the lead, but Lock Haven finally pulled away and held off the Golden Knights for a 19-16 victory in a PSAC West game at Charlotte E. Smith Field.
Gannon dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC West. Lock Haven improved to 7-0 and 2-0.
This kind of close loss has been too common for a Gannon team that has shown resilience throughout the season. The Golden Knights overcame sizable deficits in the first two games of the season only to lose 13-11 to Georgian Court and 13-12 to Molloy.
Big offensive efforts
Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) and
McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) had big offensive games for Gannon. Stevens finished with five goals, one assist, and 10 draw controls. Stevens was returning from an injury after missing the previous game against IUP.
Woodworth scored three goals and had four assists for a game-high seven points on Saturday.
GU's
Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) and
Charlie Hunter (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg) had hat tricks for GU, while
Madyson Schwartz (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) added two goals.
Lock Haven's Gabby Gunnip collectd six goals and an assist to match Woodworth's seven points.
Back-and-forth affair:
The Golden Knights trailed by two goals twice in the first half – 5-3 and 6-4 – and eventually rallied to take a 9-8 lead late in the half. Stevens had three goals and one assist in the half, and Woodworth had one goal and three assists.
The Bald Eagles, however, took a 10-9 halftime lead when Gunnip scored back-to-back goals in the final 1:16 of the second quarter.
Gannon trailed 16-13 early in the fourth quarter but again showed grit. Stevens scored one goal and Woodworth added another as Gannon trimmed the LHU lead to 16-15 with 7:30 remaining.
Charlie Hunter (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg) then scored with 6:29 to go to knot the score at 16-16.
Lock Haven held the Knights scoreless the rest of the way. Ally Weaver and Gunnip scored consecutive goals to give the Bald Eagles an 18-16 lead. Abby Katrinak then secured the win with a goal at the 2:44 mark.
