Golden Knights, IUP Battle for 14 Innings in Opener

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Gannon and Indiana (Pa.) moved up their PSAC West-opening doubleheader a day to Friday, and the location moved to Johnstown's Point Stadium, but what they didn't know was that they would be playing the equivalent of three games.

Gannon scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the opening game at 3-3 and neither team would score until the 14th inning when IUP drew a bases loaded walk for a 4-3 win. The Crimson Hawks completed the sweep with a 9-6 win in the nightcap. The 14-inning game was the longest since Gannon and IUP played a 14-inning affair in 2013. Gannon won that one 1-0.

Gannon dropped to 2-13 and 0-2 in the PSAC West while IUP is now 9-4 and 2-0. A young Gannon squad has now lost five games by a run but over the last few days head coach DJ Cannon has seen the bats come alive. Gannon had 10 hits in each game with Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) pounding out six hits.

The two teams will meet again for a doubleheader on Sunday, March 24 at Gannon. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.

Game 1:  IUP 4, Gannon 3 (14 innings)
Trailing 3-1 entering the top of the seventh inning Gannon pushed across two runs to send the game into extra innings. The two teams proceeded to go scoreless over the six innings before IUP finally pushed a run across in the bottom of the 14th. The Crimson Hawks jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two more in the second. Gannon got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning when Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) walked and Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) singled. Bemis eventually scored on a Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) sacrifice fly. Wible got his second hit of the game, a double, leading off the top of the seventh. Brendan Koroly (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) moved him to third with a single and Stangelo walked to load the bases. Dom Costello's (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) sacrifice fly plated Wible. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) reached on an RBI fielder's choice with Koroloy scoring to toe the game. Neither team would score again until the 14th, although both had opportunities. Stangelo lined into a double play with runners on first and second in the ninth. In the 11th the Golden Knights left runners on second and third. IUP threatened with runners on second and third in the 12th but Carson Whiteman (Kane, Pa./Kane Area) ended the inning with a strikeout. The Crimson Hawks finally ended the marathon with a run in the 14th. Back-to-back singles with one out followed by a walk loaded the bases. Harrison Pontoli would coax a walk on a 3-2 pitch to end the game. It made a hard-luck loser of Whiteman, who pitched 2.1 innings. Kieran Versaw-Barnes (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) settled in after a rough start to shut out IUP over the last seven innings. The right hander went nine innings, allowing seven hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) followed with two scoreless innings. Wible continued to wield a hot bat as the sophomore outfielder went 4-for-6. Koroly went 2-for-5 and Colvin was 2-of-6. Each team finished with 10 hits.

Game 2: IUP 9, Gannon 5
After battling the Crimson Hawks for 14 innings in game one the Golden Knights found themselves facing an uphill battle in game two. IUP scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning one just two hits. They took advantage of three walks and a hit by pitch. Gannon pulled to within 5-3 in the top of the third with three runs on four hits. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) drove in two runs with a double and Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) plated Bielanin with an RBI single. Gannon trailed 6-3 going into the top of the sixth. Brendan Karoly's run-scoring groundout cut the deficit to 6-4 but the Golden Knights would strand runners on first and second. IUP answered with three runs in the sixth for a 9-4 lead. Gannon would rally in the seventh as three of the first four batters reached on singles, the third by Kerestes driving in a run. Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) added a sacrifice fly to cut the gap to 9-6 but with the tying run at the plate the game ended on a popup. Gannon actually outhit IUP 10-7 with Bielanin, Kerestes and Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) all pounding out two hits. Bielanin and Kerestes had a pair of RBIs. Freshman Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) threw five innings in relief, allowing three earned runs and four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
