Golden Knights Open PSAC West Action with 12-7 Loss to IUP

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team opened PSAC West action on Wednesday afternoon against Indiana (Pa.) on a day better suited for football. The two teams endured gusty winds and wind chills in the high teens with IUP overcoming an early Gannon lead to defeat the Golden Knights 12-7.

Gannon falls to 2-4 on the season with the loss snapping a two-game winning streak. IUP, picked to finish second in the PSAC West preseason poll, is now 2-3.

The Golden Knights scored twice in the opening five minutes to take a quick 2-0 lead. Madyson Schwartz (Philadelphia, Pa./Franklin Towne Charter) opened the scoring just over two minutes into the match with her 11th goal, assisted by  Maggie McGinnis (Brunswick, Oh./Brunswick). McKenna Woodworth's (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) seventh goal of the year at the 10:23 mark made it 2-0.

The Crimson Hawks answered with five straight goals in just over five minutes to go ahead 5-2. A high-scoring first quarter saw Gannon score twice before the end of the period. Angie George (Brecksville, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) scored at 3:18, her ninth goal of the season, and less than a minute later Macy Hepditch's (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) free position goal made it 5-4, It was her eighth of the year.

The second quarter turned into the exact opposite of the opening 15 minutes. Just one goal was scored, that by IUP at the 3:21 mark as the Crimson Hawks led 6-4 at the half.

Three goals were scored in the third quarter, all by IUP as the Crimson Hawks built their lead to 9-4. Gannon would try to rally in the fourth quarter but every time they scored a goal the Crimson Hawks were able to answer. Gannon never pulled closer than four goals as Maggie McKinnis, Charlie Hunter (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg) and Emma-Cait Cogan (Westerville, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) found the back of the net.

IUP held a 38-17 advantage in shots, along with 25-14 in shots on goal. Haleigh Manning (Milton, Ga./Cambridge) returned in goal after missing the last two matches with an injury. She finished with 13 saves.
