Wible Hits Two Home Runs in 10-Run Seventh Inning as Gannon Defeats Fairmont State 18-10

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two teams in desperate need of a win took part in a slugfest on Wednesday afternoon in a game that was scheduled to be played on a different date and location. Gannon (2-11) exploded for 10 runs in the seventh inning to rally for an 18-10 win over Fairmont State (2-13) in a nine-inning contest.

The doubleheader was moved back a day and was played at Mylan Park in Morgantown. The change and day and venue definitely proved to the liking of the Gannon bats. The Golden Knights pounded out a season-high 14 hits. They scored 18 runs after scoring 23 total in the previous 12 games.

Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) was the catalyst for the big seventh inning. The sophomore designated hitter cracked a solo home run early in the inning then came back to hit a grand slam later in the frame.

Gannon opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning. Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) walked and stole second. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) was hit by a pitch. Colvin scored when Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) reached on an error with Bielanin moving up to second and Colvin scoring. Bemis and Bielanin moved up on a double steal and Bielanin scored on Carson Wible's (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) sacrifice fly.

Fairmont State scored a run in the second then took the lead at 5-4 with four runs in the bottom of the third. Three scored on a bases loaded triple by Vince Sabatino.

Gannon closed to 5-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) doubled with one out and scored on an error. Drew Sangelo plated the second run with a two-out single.

The Falcons struck for four runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 9-4 lead but the game turned in the top of the seventh. Gannon sent 15 batters to the plate and scored ten runs to take a 14-9 lead.

The inning began with a one-out home run by Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin). The next six batters reached base, with Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) driving in a run with a single and Colvin plating two with a double and Bielanin two more with a single. Then Wible stepped to plate again with the bases loaded and promptly hit a grand slam for his second home run of the inning.

Gannon widened its lead in the eighth and ninth with a pair of runs in each frame. In the eighth Bielanin drove in his third run with an RBI single and another scored on an error. Costello picked up his second RBI of the day in the ninth with a single and Bielanin hit a sacrifice fly for his fourth RBI.

The Golden Knights pounded out a season-high 14 hits while taking advantage of 12 walks and five Fairmont State errors. Gannon, meanwhile, played errorless ball.

Wible finished with a career-high six RBIs while Bielanin was 3-for-5 with four RBIs.  Brenda Koroly reached base on five of six trips to the plate with a 4-for-4 effort and a walks. Colvin drove in a pair of runs and had a hit while walking three times. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) walked three times and stole a pair of bases.

Freshman Ryan Bioni (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) was the fourth of five pitchers used and picked up his first career win, going two scoreless innings and striking out a pair.

Gannon opens up PSAC West action this weekend with a pair doubleheaders against Indiana (Pa.). The two were originally scheduled to play at IUP on Saturday but that twinbill has been moved up a day to Friday. They then return for two more games in Erie on Sunday.
