Kerestes Enjoys Big Day in Doubleheader vs. D'Youville

CARY, N.C. – A young Gannon baseball team will have to wait one more day to pick up win number one on the early 2024 season. After dropping a one-run game to No. 18 West Chester on Friday in the Cary Challenge the Golden Knights fell to D'Youville by scores of 5-2 and 5-4 on Saturday and are now 0-7. The games are being played at the USA Baseball Training Complex.

The Golden Knights have one game remaining, facing Frostburg State on Sunday. First pitch for the nine-inning game is set for 9 a.m.

Game 1 – D'Youville 5, Gannon 2
The Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a single run in the bottom of the first and three more runs in the third courtesy of a three-run homer by Jeremy Glinski. The Golden Knights got on the board in the top of the fifth with a run. Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) hit a leadoff double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on freshman Drew Stangelo's (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) RBI single to center. D'Youville added a two-out run on a double in the bottom of the frame. Gannon made it 5-2 in the top of sixth. Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kerestes drove in the run with a single to right, and the Golden Knights had the bases loaded with just one out. They were unable to score again, however, following with a popout and groundout. Gannon would end the day outhitting the Saints 10-8. Kerestes, in his first start of the season, went 3-for-3 with a double and a single. Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) added two hits in three at bats. Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) started and went the first three innings, with Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) turning in three strong innings in relief. Boyer allowed hits and a run while striking out one.

Game 2 – D'Youville 5, Gannon 4
D'Youville (5-2) broke Gannon's hearts with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh after Gannon took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Golden Knights entered the bottom of the sixth inning down 3-2. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) led off the inning with a double and Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) tied the game with a triple to center field. Justin Kerestes (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Central Catholic) reached on a walk, and Carson Wible (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) gave Gannon the lead with a sacrifice fly. Corey Shields (Waterford, Pa./Fort LeBoeuf), who led Gannon with three saves, entered in the top of the seventh. The right hander retired the first batter but walked the next two. Both came around to score on Billy Morris' game-winning double. Gannon went down in order in the bottom of the seventh. Both teams managed six hits. Gannon had four extra base hits, with Dom Pearson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) adding doubles.
