ERIE, Pa. – Swimmer
Emily Hedges (Peachtree Corners, Ga./St Pius X Catholic) and basketball player
Nigel Haughton (Bel Air, Md./South Kent) have been named the Gannon University Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Feb. 20. The Gannon Student-Athlete of the Week Award is sponsored by Chick-fil-A of Erie.
While swimming at the PSAC Championships on Friday in Carlisle, Hedges broke her own school record in the 200-yard butterfly to earn All-PSAC status.Â
The freshman touched the wall in 2 minutes, 6.01 seconds to place third to secure All-PSAC accolades during Day 3 of the four-day meet at Keystone Aquatics Center.
During the regular season, Hedges broke Madeline Summers' 10-year record in the event with a time of 2:06.45 at Cleveland State's Magnus Cup.
On Day 2 of the PSAC Championships, Hedges advanced to the A finals of the 400 IM and finished eighth with a time of 4:43.88.
Haughton, a 6-foot-1 guard, helped Gannon to back-to-back wins over Slippery Rock and Clarion as the Golden Knights extended their winning streak to 12 games.
The graduate student shot 70 percent (7-of-10) from the field while averaging 9.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. He also was a key defensive player on Gannon's press as he averaged 4.5 steals per game.
In a 94-91 win over Slippery Rock, Haughton compiled eight points, seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists. He sank 2-of-3 3-point attempts and made both of his free-throw attempts.
In Gannon's 100-81 victory over Clarion, Haughton scored 11 points (on 5-of-7 shooting) and added five steals, four rebounds, and three steals.
